King's Joy Hotel
Ranked #205 of 6,606 Hotels in Beijing
Reviewed July 12, 2012

Located under a ten minute walk to Tienamen Square (a bit more to the forbidden city) the King's Joy Hotel is surrounded by what's left of old traditional China. Wandering the nearby streets is as authentic gets, and yet it won't take you long to come across McDonalds and designer stores like Zara, a symbol of China's quick emrace of the western world.
This is a good tourist class hotel with basic services offered (alas no pool) and is clean and modern. Both Intrepid and Gecko's tours use this hotel as their base it Beijing, among others, a testament to good value and quality.
They also offer a variety of tours to the great wall etc, which I assume anyone coming to Beijing will want to do. Nothing to complain about here.

We had a spacious clean and comfortable room with a good view of the street. The bathroom was clean and the shower good. The staff are most helpful and friendly. The location couldn't be better. Close to metro and easy walk to Tiananmen Square. Very good bar on the top floor.Very reasonable tarriff.

Very basic, but very central. Near Tiananmen Square and hutongs. Not recommended for families, but good for bacpackers. It has got a sort of bar upstairs, where you have free wi-fi and don't have to order a drink.

Stayed In China whilst visiting my daughter working out there. The Kings Joy was is a smallish hotel/hostel. I shared a twin room with my daughter, clean crisp white bed linen, air con (needed it) and it was free, good sized bathroom with hot working shower. They even supplied spare tooth brushes and toothpaste. I would recommend this place to unfussy travellers where main priority is cleanliness. The television didn't work BUT who goes to Beijing to watch television. There is a small reception area with friendly and helpful staff and also a small area where you can book tours, taxis etc. together with an internet area. There is a bigger internet area upstairs should the smaller one downstairs be full. At the top of the hotel is a lively bar area that services good quality food and very reasonably priced. Good Coffee and various other drinks including juices. The breakfasts here are really worth while ordering. We opted for Gypsy Toast (egg bread) with maple syrup...Thick cut, quality tasting bread and the best fresh juice around. If you used to Caribbean style 5* hotels then this place may not suit, HOWEVER personally I would stay again, my daughter has stayed here with other young people (they have larger rooms for friends that want to stay together..and it gets cheaper if you share) we paid£10.00 each but on other occasions that she has visited and stayed in a four bedded room she has paid as low as £4.00. Really Good Quality Low Cost Accommodation, with a lively bar.

Room Tip: For privacy ask for a twin

We finished off a trip from hong kong at the king's joy hotel. The room was of a good standard and the location was great for site seeing as its only a short walk to the under ground and the forbidden city.

We got to this hotel by accident, as our reservation at another place was cancelled.
Luckily King's Joy had a room available (crazy number of people come to Beijing during holidays).
The place is located in a Hutong area, which is a typical Beijing neighbourhood with traditional grey buildings. Lots of shops, cafes, bistros and hostels there.
10 minutes walk to Tiananmen and to Qianmen subway station. Very nice location indeed.
The stuff speaks good English and are very helpful, answering all the questions and providing information on public transport, places of interest, tickets and so on.
As this is a hostel type hotel you can book a bed, but we stayed in a twin room. Rooms are small, tidy, but things are quite old, which didn't bother me, but can be a downside for some people.
What I liked the best was the breakfast - usually at Chinese hotels I'm not able to eat breakfast, but here I quite enjoyed it.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone who is looking for a quite convenient place in the centre with helpful staff and more than affordable prices.

I give it 2.5. Booked one night and all was good. Left for a night, then rebooked for three more nights- it all went downhill upon our return. The room we were shown (3rd floor) had dirty shoe marks on the walls and smelled like the inside of an ashtray. We asked to move and were told there were no other rooms by one girl at the desk. We politely insisted several times and then were finally shown one on the 6th floor. Looked much better but after a day we quickly found the whole room smelled like the sewage. We had to keep the bathroom door closed at all times it was so bad. The whole hostel smells of cigs too. Also- if you book through hostelworld.com it does not include breakfast (same price as if you book thru them directly and that does includes breakfast).

Pros: nice bar on the top floor. Very convenient location. Christine at the front desk was great- she was the one who finally got us a different room (no help from the other girl). Christine was very helpful and polite, as was the gentleman at the front desk.

Would be much better if they could fix the smells- Bring some incense!
