We arrived at the hotel at 7pm on New Year's Eve to find that other than a lone receptionist hiding behind the front desk, there was nobody around. There was no porter, doorman, guest or anyone in the lobby. We were puzzled as to why such a posh looking 5 star hotel was lifeless. Subsequently, we learnt that GuoYi is a hotel used by senior government officials for seminars. There was no seminar during the 3 days public holidays over the New Year period so the hotel has gone into a near shut down. On 4 Jan the whole place came alive bustling with activities. The hotel has all the 5 star qualities but is not really suitable for normal tourists. It is not accessible to taxis because it is off the main road. Moreover taxi rarely comes round the hotel because most hotel guests drive or are chauffeured. We found that most taxi drivers did not know of this 5 star hotel but knew the nearby 3 and 4 star hotels. This hotel suited us because it was 2 minutes walk to the Beijing Institute of Education where our son was on an immersion program. The hotel is also a 2 minutes walk to the "zoo shopping area", a wholesale clothes market with great bargains.
