“Bit out of the centre”

We stayed here at the beginning of our tour of China. It is in a business district and there are no nearby shops or restaurants. There were three hotel restaurants. The one on the top floor was loosed. We ate twice in the Chinese Restaurant. The first time there were a couple of other tables occupied, the second we were alone. Not much fun the 24hour buffet restaurant had little to offer us as vegetarians , and was virtually empty. We resorted to room service, not quite how we envisaged spending our evenings. The staff were willing and helpful, but hampered by our lack of chinese and their lack of english! It was 30 min taxi ride into the centre.

I stayed here with my sister, neice and great neice in October. The property was lovely. We had booked through Chinatours. We needed to leave a deposit so I provided my credit card. The desk clerk took my card and disappeared with it into a back office! I told him that wasn't acceptable where I came from and I have been monitoring my card carefully since then. Our rooms were very nice, altho one of our too rooms was cold and they couldn't get it to warm up....even tho maintenance was informed. The way the tub is curtained makes it difficult to shower without ending up with water ALL OVER the floor, which causes a mess. Our only negative was the restaurant. The breakfast buffet was fine, but if you tried to order off the menu which we attempted a couple times they either didn't have te items listed or they came only partially cooked. I would stay at the hotel again but would avoid the restaurant. Also we wanted to use the pool, but couldn't use it without a swim cap and the price to buy one from the hotel was ridiculous so we didn't use the pool.

We enjoyed our stay, which was for business with sightseeing. The buffet at breakfast was great but we had a deal so it felt good value. We had a couple of minor problems. At first we were given a smoking room so had to ask for non-smoking. The room was too warm and the air con did not seem to work. The staff at the desk and in the office were not as responsive as we are used to. Room service and laundry were fine. The people on the door were helpful but there is a taxi shortage in Beijing so leave plenty of time. There was noise from the ring road at the front but it did not stop us sleeping.

The hotel is very beautiful and the staff are friendly. We stayed in two different rooms during our one week stay and both rooms were clean and the beds were great, however the sofa chair in both rooms was filthy. The carpet was stained and the shower door leaked and the vanity in the bathroom was miniscule. However if you have stayed in other Chinese hotels with hard beds this one is a keeper. Get over the the short falls and the room was comfortable and well equipped and stocked with toiletries. The breakfast buffet was excellent great variety fruit, cereals, bread, pastry, eggs cooked to your liking including great omelets. Coffee was excellent as was the freshly squeezed orange, cucumber and celery, and sweet melon juices. Tremendous variety of hot and cold Chinese dishes if you are adventurous. Service was excellent and very attentive. Also a 7/11 (beer and wine) around the back of the hotel.

Room Tip: 5th floor is where the spa is. Specify whether you want shower and tub as well as King or twin beds...

This was the first stop after the long flight, and we were glad that it not only looked beautiful from the outside, it followed through inside as well. The rooms are very spacious and we were able to open and leave out our suitcases with no trouble. The bathroom was large with a tub and a separate shower, and lots of goodies which were refilled every day if you used them. The beds were quite comfortable and the linens on them were lovely. The breakfast area was spacious and the food was more than adequate. Even the coffee was fine. The front desk was very accommodating for changing money and they all seemed to understand English as well. We had no problem at all with this hotel and I would definitely return to it and recommend it.

My husband and I booked two nights stay at this hotel in October 2012 during our visit to Beijing. The subway was very close (within three blocks of walking) which was incredibly convenient as cabs can be expensive if you're coming from this area to the CBD or any large shopping/touristy areas.
The wireless Internet was only available in the lobby, which we found incredibly
annoying. We also used the hotel breakfast buffet one morning which set us back US$50. There were no prices listed and the help didn't speak very good English so we unknowingly ate the most expensive breakfast of our trip that morning. The concierge desk was helpful enough, but you must be very patient as they too don't speak very good English...however, who can blame them? It's not their first language & we were very appreciative for any help.
The room was a spacious size with a bathtub and shower. The room provided robes and slippers which we found very nice and comforting after a long day of touring. The bed however was not as comfortable what we are used to in the US.
For the price we paid, approximately US$150 a night, we would stay here again. However the location wasn't our favorite. But for the price and the quality it was a nice find.

I just got back from taking one of those 9 day tours of China which included touring parts of Beijing. Our tour company had us stay at the Oriental Bay International Hotel. Coming off of a 14 hour flight and starting the first full day of our tour the next day at 6 am left my sister and extremely exhausted. I did not realize that while moving my clothing out of suitcase, that a small white pouch where I had stashed $200 had fallen out. By the time I had realized it I just got back after being out for 10 hrs and search the entire room for it and realized that housekeeping that came in that morning right after I had left and taken the money. My sister and I alerted the front desk and to file a complaint and received one of the worst customer service experiences from a hotel. The front desk manager came to my room with the head of housekeeping to ask if they could search our room for the cash which at that point, I knew the money wasn't going to be returned, but would have liked at least some type of acknowledgement or apology on behalf of their housekeeping staff. I felt like the staff at Oriental Bay hotel was not motivated at all to help their customers rather they made us feel as if we were trying make up a story of having money stolen. The point of customer service is not to make guests feel as if they did something wrong and we are travelers from out of the country hoping to experience a wonderful time in China, but the stay at Oriental Bay marred it. Be wary of the hotel staff and that is true for anywhere you stay but we also stayed Courtyard Marriott in Shanghai and received impeccable customer service.
