“good location in Haidian but far from tourist spots in old beijing”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

Location: walking distance to subway line 4 and line 10. got a supermarket and shopping mall nearby. the hotel is located in Haidian district, which is west side of Beijing. very close to Summer Palace, but far away from all other tourist spots, like forbidden city, CBD, etc. Most of expats restaurants are on the east side, Jianguo & Sanlintun. you can take a cab (approx. USD 55) or subway (RMB 2) to get there. But you travel on the rush hour, it normally takes 30-40 mins to go from west to east side of the city by car and packed in the subway. (most likely rush hour in Tokyo)

Breakfast: limited choice. juice tastes likely from cans. got milk and yogurt daily and soy milk twice a week. plain fried rice (hardly see meat or egg.) We stayed there for a month. I skipped last two weeks as I got tired about feeding myself with plain toast every morning.

Room: Reasonable size. Housekeeping service comes only 3 times a week and sometimes manage to skip vacuum the floor. But they will do it upon you request for sure. They didn't change shower curtain daily. They finally got it replaced upon my request after 3 weeks and it stink already. Besides, they only provide hotel size shampoo, conditioners, and detergent 1st day you check in and mention it is not part of the service from them during the stay. So we will have to get those from supermarket for household size. (of course, the household size is way too much for a month consumption.) A/C: they seems running saving during the night. we didn't really have a/c but vent while we sleep. We have asked the staff come and check once. It works the 1st night after he fixed but it becomes vent again rest of the month. But night in Beijing is about 23-25 degree and occasionally rains in July. So we manage to survive.

Staff: nice in general. but not very professional about good restaurants in town. You will have to grab your guide book to ask for help.

Internet: Ethernet connection is fine but wireless is horrible. I have to bring my IPAD2 outside my room to get reception. one staff told us it is the best for wireless nearby kitchen and the other staff told us it is the best for wireless in the lobby, which we were told by the other staff it is not true. Very misleading.

Child friendly: China is child friendly country. With the in room kitchen, we will be able to cook for our kids. So we will still recommend this place if you travel with kids. But it is about 10 min walking to subway station and expect 15-20 min walk with young kids/toddlers.

If you are a business traveler, you should avoid this hotel because their Internet is really bad. Their wired in-room Internet drops or gets delayed too often. Further, the complimentary wifi signal is weak in the room and realistically works only when you sit in the common hallway area.

Maid often does an incomplete cleaning job.

Breakfast only offers high fat proteins (bacon, fried chicken, meatballs)

Pool and pool service are very good.

We had a 2 bedroom apartment. It was very roomy with 2 bedrooms and 2 baths. The second bath was an unexpected bonus. The kitchen was stocked with enough plates, utensils, glassses, pans and appliances. It was great to have a washing machine and dryer so we didn't have to pack as much. We had a TV and DVD player in both the living room and one bedroom, with cable and satellite. The walk to the Subway took about 10 minutes, but wasn't bad. There were plenty of restaurants within 2 blocks and a CarreFour and WuMart also within walking distance. The pool was very large. It did close for maintenance the last week we were there. The breakfast buffet was filling, but not extraordinary. The glass walls on the master bedroom bathroom walls took some getting used to. We never waited very long for elevators. We thought the value was very good and would stay there again.

I have been staying with my family here for almost two months. On the very first day when I moved in, I noticed that the internet was extremely slow and flaky. I notified the front desk immediately and they promised to resolve the issue ASAP. After one week, I didn't notice any difference, so I called again and was told that the issue could not be resolved any time soon. It's been two months now and the internet is still extremely slow. My VPN got disconnected every 2-5 minutes and I cannot get any work done at this hotel.

We stayed at the Somerset Zhongguancun over the Christmas holidays and chose these serviced apartments because of the proximity to our son's university. We booked a 2 bedroom apartment to give our son a break from residence life and treat him to some "home cooked" meals. We were very happy with all aspects of the hotel: the service, size of the suite, amenities for cooking and doing laundry, access to supermarkets and other shopping. We opted to include breakfast with our stay and the staff was very good to provide us with some small amounts of ingredients such as spices for our own cooking.
Though not central to many tourist attraction, the metro is just a few steps away and RMB 2.00 allows you to use the whole system.

check-in:
efficient and smiling staff attended to our luguage and rooms. the experience was pleasant but a tad too long.

room:
we had a 2 bedroom suite. not as spacious as the ascott beijing but good enough for the 4 of us. there's a balcony from the master bedroom. there's almost more television channels in this apartment.

breakfast:
very disappointing with no egg station, no wholemeal bread, only white bread, sad-looking pastries, salad, fried noodles and other chinese food that's bland and oily.

location:
convenience stores and many food joints just round the corner or a street away. although this apartment is further form the city, it was only 15mins ride from summer palace. catching a cab was difficult, so you will need to walk out to the main street to get one. if you are ok with bus and trains, they are close by as well.
