“You get what you pay for”
Reviewed November 27, 2012 via mobile

I was looking for a cheap hotel close to a metro station, which hopefully wouldn't have rats og cockroaches running around everywhere. Ping an fu hotel was exactly that - and nothing more. I found what I was looking for, so didn't really disappoint in any way, however before you book you should ask yourself if you can live with the following:
Hotel looks tired (in the dirty kind of way with paint falling off in the bathromm) inside out. Rooms, restaurant.... everything.
I booked on the 4th floor and got second floor = more notice from the road outside (but no biggie)
Bed is rock hard
Only tried breakfast, but as a westerner it's an absolute no go.... Arrived at 830 (should be open to 930) and there was hardly any food left. The food that was there was cold and Chinese (except for a boiled egg which was hard and cold - mm). Had toast (which she found out back upon request) with jam, and a coffe. End of story - no cheese, meat, fruit, cereal - there was nothing.
Only Chinese tv

On the plus side the internet is free and works great, and there's hot water in the shower.

To sum it up: if you need a cheap place to crash and you can live with a hard bed and no breakfast - go for it. If not, pay a bit extra and stay a swissotel 2 blocks away since its pretty okay priced in comparison.

Stayed at this hotel as part of a tour. Nothing amazing. We specifically requested NO rooms facing walls, back alleys, etc, and got one anyway. Asked to be moved, & were told the hotel was full. Had a dead cricket in the wardrobe when we arrived, and it was still there when we left. Breakfast was mediocre at best, and rather inconsistent - the second morning we were there, they had a large group in, and did not seem to have catered for all of the residents, so we had to make do with a couple of pieces of soggy watermelon. Would look for other accommodation if I ever went back to Beijing.

Front deck staffs are helpful. First got our rooms in the first floor with smells of smoke. Ask for changing rooms and got in the second floor -Not bad room.
Bulding is old - Like the location.

This hotel is in a good location near the subway. Thats the only good thing about it. The hotel is old and needs to be updated. The room was dirty and most of the staff spoke very little english. The cleaning lady argued with me when I asked her to change the sheets (!) but some of the staff was very friendly and helpful.
I can not recommend this hotel. Add a few bucks instead and get a better standard...

In 10 rooms were mould and every room smells bad. Some wallpapers weren´t on the wall anymore and behind the wallpaper was black mould. There were even mould on the shower curtain. We get another room, but I must share this room with 3 other persons from my group because in all the other rooms were mould. We didn´t get an apologize from the hotel!

Spent an entire month at this hotel. Location is wonderful! Directly on the main road, 50m away from metro station zhangzhizhong lu. The hotel is surrounded by an authentic Beijing neighborhood so you're immersed in the culture immediately. Plenty of good and reasonably priced restaurants on Dongsi Bei Lou and Dongzhimen Inner Street (10-15mins walking distance to hotel - don't be put off by the exterior, food is generally pretty good in almost all of them). For fabulous duck (don't waste your money on fancy central duck places - here@78yuan per duck) go to the restaurant just at the corner of the road (go 50m left after exiting hotel, you'll see the hanging ducks in the window).

The hotel itself is decent although there's a strange stale smell throughout the entire hotel (mix of cigarettes and kitchen). Rooms are spacious and mostly quiet, with decent bathrooms and good room service. Staff speak a little english at reception, but a little sign language and a smile go a long way. The breakfast is pretty traditional (rice porridge, dim sum, steamed veggies...there's also some ''croissants'' and ''danish pastries'') but don't get your hopes up. Plenty of good street food breakfast available close to hotel for 5-6yuan. THERE IS INDEED AN ELEVATOR!

My wife and I decided to revisit Beijing by ourselves having been with a tour group last year. We chose the Ping An Fu as we had liked it last time around. This time, it was even better!
Staff were very friendly and helpful (and very patient with our grasp of the Chinese language - the reception staff's English is very good - but as we are learning Chinese, we tried to use it wherever possible and the staff were very supportive!). We tried to use a PC in the business centre but couldn't get a connection so one of the managers took us into his office and let us use his PC - great customer service!
On our first night there, we wanted to eat at the hotel but the restaurant was full - so they gave us a private side room (at no extra cost) and the service was as good as in the restaurant. Food here is very, very good with an extensive menu of classic Chinese dishes, all very well cooked and presented.
Breakfast is now served in the 2nd floor restaurant - still very comprehensive spread - as the shop has moved to the old restaurant area and the old shop is now a tearoom/bar - very nicely done,
Our room was once again on the fourth floor with a great view over the hutong behind (one of which was being renovated which was quite fascinating to watch the daily progress). Room was clean and well provisioned - large TV (which switches on from the bedside console) and the king size bed. Room service cleaned, tidied, made the bed and restocked every day.
It was easy to hail a taxi from the hotel but by half way through our break we felt confident enough to use the subway (3 minute walk from the hotel) and for 2 yuan per trip (anywhere the subway goes!) this was a real eye opener! Better by far than London!
Overall, as I say, this place just gets better - and we hope to see it again soon! Very good value for money with staff who all seem to really know what customer service is about!
