“Convenient location with good restaurant”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2011

I stayed here because I couldn't get an outgoing sleeper ticket. It's a few hundred feet from the ticket sales hall. Thanks to the reviewer below; I did not know that there were two Railway Hotels here.

The front desk spoke a tiny bit of English. Checking in after 7 PM, they gave me a small discount from the displayed rack rate. They accept foreign issued cards. The rooms are totally forgettable ordinary Chinese hotel rooms. In fact they've already blurred in with the others and can't recall any specifics. I was not bothered by the noise but then I had to check out to make my train at 6:24 AM. Like just about all Chinese hotel rooms, there is free cable internet.

I ate downstairs in their first floor restaurant, among the last guests. I was very impressed with the food, particularly one dish; Stir fried luffa and edamame. It's a pretty unusual dish. Since I love food, this goes a long way for me. They also did room service. I was able to avoid wandering around the chaos of the station area looking for food.

There are two railway hotels within 300m of Beijing West Railway station. One is 5 star, quiet and sophisticated, and the other is this one. There are several good points to this hotel. It has decent sized rooms, the food in the down stairs restaurant is edible, the room I stayed in was clean, modern, well serviced with free toiletries and it is right on top of the railway station. However, there are several problems too.

My biggest issue was getting to the hotel. It would appear that they first built the hotel, then added the bus terminal. To stop people running in front of busses there is a fence surrounding the bus terminal. This fence means that you have to walk a fair distance around the bus terminal to get to the front door. If you arrive after 10pm, the gates are shut forcing you to squeeze through a gap. Other problems include random hot water (some days its barely warm, other times its very hot), a lot of noise from the surrounding bus terminal & train station - not good for light sleepers, flood lights that make the outside look beautiful but shine into your room and aren’t turned off until 12am, and a business centre that is more kiosk then business centre.

As a side note, no one on the staff spoke English and even the basics like “what time is check-out” required complex hand gestures. This was slightly annoying as everything in my room was translated into English, suggesting an attempt was made at some time in the past. One final positive was that the housekeeping was very good & very discrete. Even though they were often starting to service the rooms at 8am, I was never disturbed even if I was still in my room at 10am.
