At the south end, and now another area along the street further north, are the relativelty well-known Village shopping areas. 3.3 (a mall there) is horrendously overpriced! Don't stop there. Yashow Market is still over-priced (near the S end) but at the very least has shops where you can have things tailor made. 3.3 is pure rip-off: capitalizing on tourists who know no better. Things will be more expensive here than in NYC and the quality is among the worst you can find in the world. The bars are very shady here - go to nearby Gongti or stick to the bars that are located at the Village (South) itself. Those are fine, expensive but with good decor and drinks you'll recognize. Note! The little bars lining the street sell fake alcohol (marked with copied, identical labels) that can cause harm. Avoid the bars, but stop at the Village shopping center for your Western fix.

This is a night time drinking area for expats and Chinese.

The street is lined with bars that are mostly priced for expats and rich Chinese. There are a few bars that are cheap but you must know where to go. If you look like a tourist they will charge you.

There are a few places that are managed by expats but most are run by Chinese. This makes for an expat venue by what a Chinese person thinks an expats venue should be for someone who has probably never left China. A Chinese bar typically has a very small dance floor and is mostly seated tables with little if no bar at all.

Most locations are blaring pop music. You will hear the same music in almost every bar. You might even hear the same song over and over again if you rotate bars fast enough. Don't be afraid to go into the back alleys and the next few streets over. There are a lot of hidden bars and these are the more interesting ones.

People will be begging, selling plastic toys, and even offering some illegal things as you walk from bar to bar. The local people here are mostly younger. There are many Chinese here looking to socialize with foreigners.

There is a mall that is attached to the street that sell medium scale brands. The Beijing Apple store is located here too.

Visit this place in daylight to see how dismal, shabby, crusty, smokey most of the joints are. Go in the evening to see the ghastly creatures who inhabit it. Don't stay long.

You can meet some local girls here and drink overpriced Qingdao beer. The music is loud and it's popular with people who aren't familiar with the area. And there are a lot of local girls. So, that could be fun if that's what you are looking for.

The middle part of Sanlitun is a new mall, which is interesting and boring at the same time.

The back part of Sanlitun is the best, with the restaurants around the Tree and 1st floor and the fried fish place. Those places are the reason to go to Sanlitun.

A lot of different styles of bars, with bands, without bands, good food, OK food, but drinks are all the same, not cheap, but alright. :) If you want to hang out with friends, Sunlitun Bar Street is not a bad place to go. You can also check out the Sunlitun village, quite a lot of good stuff there.
