We were staying locally and I will admit to going for walks in Wanfujing Street in the morning, the afternoon, the evening, and at night. The rythym of the street changes as the day goes on. Great street market (Wanfujing snack street) - straight out of the made for tourists handbook but I'm a tourist so that suits me. In the rest of the street, all the brands you could possibly ask for and even a nice big cathedral so you seek redemption afterwards.

Wangfujing street is a place you can find almost every international brand available from fast food chains like Mcdonalds to branded goods like Apple, Starbucks and Haagen Dazs.

Pros:

1. The original Apple store in Wangfujing is a must visit shrine for any Apple fan, especially ones who don't have original Apple stores in your country. The 3 storeys store is eye catching and the translucent staircase and bright lighting really makes the visit cultish in nature. However, I will only recommend a visit and not buy any of the accessories. Reason is because most of the accessories are either same price but more expensive than most developed countries. Moreover, there are no unique accessories there that cannot be found in other countries.

2. Despite the expensive goods, you can find a good variety of food prices available, from posh Chinese restaurants to fast food chains McDonalds and KFC. it is possible to be on a budget when you are hunting for food during your shopping experience. Some food chains offer promotions to attract customers. I had a good return offer discount from Haagen Dazs.

3. Security is tight. You can shop in peace knowing that there are policemen walking around and having quite a few portable stations. It is really safe. In fact, I have to comment that some of the officers are quite helpful. There were a few instances where I asked for directions and the officers answered me politely. There are ones who ignored me too. However, I met more polite police officers than the rude ones. They make my day in this holiday. Keep up the good service.

Cons:

1. I was disappointed not to find any middle class supermarkets there. You cannot find any Carrefour, Tesco or Walmart, There are a few small supermarkets that sell either imported like chocolates at high prices or local goods at unattractive prices. Though I understand that the rental is high, it is still a bit regretful that there is no middle class supermarkets there, a common sight in other cities in China like Guangzhou. This can be quite inconvenient for tourists staying around the area looking for items like mineral water.

2. There are many international brands stationed in Wangfujing but prices are either the same or slightly more expensive than other countries. There is no X factor.

3. There are many local sports and fashion brands there. However, the prices are not competitive and similar to prices sold in other countries. Moreover, some of the shops are not as well-equipped with the latest edition stuff. I went into a 3 storey Li Ning flagship store in Wangfujing wanting to buy some latest tennis apparel especially the ones wore by Marin Cilic during the 2014 US Open that just ended weeks ago. I was told the tennis items are all out of stock. This is a disappointment for a 3 storey flagship store.

In conclusion, I will recommend a visit there as it is a key famous and crowded shopping area. However, the visit is more to enjoy the joyous atmosphere rather than literal shopping for poor value for money goods.

I was looking for bargain but the stores are all high end. I visited the food street and saw the infamous insect stalls. I was not couragous enough to try the live scorpions.

Admitted, I am not a fan of animals on a stick or seastars, snails, snakes, scorpions and (partly alive) fried in hot oil - but you will not change the culture by not going there. Many other delicious (western-stomach-friendly) snacks around in a beautiful scenery. Especially the small super-crowded street with the Chinese arch on the entrance side is worth seeing. Further down the WangFuJing Lu you will find a long row of snack-stalls with all different kinds of seafood, Chinese hamburgers and the other mentioned snacks. Rest of the street is a huge shopping strip with all the expensive stores you are used to from your stay in China. Go there for the snacks and experience, not necessarily for the shopping adventure.
