“Closest to Forbidden City”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 7, 2013

Being a walker, i researched every hotel for convenience to the Bejing attractions and Jade Garden seemed the best fit .It turned out exactly as I had planned through my Trip Advisor research. This hotel is situated on a street within 15 minutes walking distance to the Square and all the sights. The only problem I encountered was that the maps are very sketchy about the streets and directions. I rely on maps everywhere, and I found the Beijing maps very inaccurate and confusing. No fault of the hotel though. The walk is straight forward and easy and safe to walk day or night. As a single woman traveler, safety is always a concern.
The hotel itself is pretty straight forward to find, contrary to the other posts. It is on a main street right up from the night market and shopping district, so very convenient there. Yes , the front desk staff is lacking a little with the English, but they are very helpful and can get the basic job of checking in and out done efficiently. For my first stay, I had a single room which was quite clean and adequate. I love having a bathtub which alot of hotels do not offer with singles. My internet, attached to the TV was not working ,but there was someone there to fix it almost before I could hang up the phone. Rooms were cleaned daily and well restocked . Beware tho, not to open the pre-packaged kit in the bathroom as it is a chargable item which I didn"t realize. Beds are a little on the hard side, but I was too tired to care. Noise is about average with the closing doors causing the most problems ,just as most places. I always take a sound machine anyway, Yes, the hallway rugs could use some cleaning/updating but really a minor detail. Also, I was surprised to find my 2 pronged plugs worked on the electric system. A grounded 3 prong plug needs a convertertho, and I overheard a person ask the desk for one and it was not available. So, bring your own. The restaurant served a wonderful chinese/european/english breakfast. Just about anything one could wish for was available. A buffet lunch is also available, but I did'nt try it out as breakfast propelled me thru to dinner!!!
On my return from the country trip to Yangshou, I re-booked Jade Garden even though I hadn"t planned to. This time I was upgraded to a deluxe room that made me want to spend more time there than seeing the last sights I had planned to see!! The room was elegant with a free standing tub, an automatic toilet( the kind that does everything for you) and a big comfortable bed and sitting area. It's not much more than the single and a very nice treat.
As I mentioned , the area is well populated with restaurants and there is a" Subway" right
across the street if in the mood for a quick american bite. The night market is not to be missed and is 5 minutes walk. The array of "food" items is astonishing. Overheard one morning in the hotel restaurant from some Aussie teachers to a "greenish "looking male teacher "I knew you shouldn"t have eaten those scorpions last night"!!! A very busy night shopping street is also a 5 minute walk in the same direction ,good for a night's activities.
As for the drawbacks, the hotel is a good 15 minute walk from both subway stations,9 rather in between them.) Would not recommend walking with alot of luggage but I managed both with my carry on. Again, rather hard to find for the first time with the inadequate maps but I got good directions from a sympathetic chinese tour director who actually walked me to the hotel (what I LOVE about travelling) The hotel also needs to amp up seating in the lobby. It has adequate space for seating, but has very little area to sit while waiting for tours or a taxi. I mentioned that to IVY , a very nice day manager who seemed very sympathetic and tuned to my ideas.
All in all, this is a great and not expensive choice in very convienent area. If you want glitz and glamour though stay at one of the more distant and expensive hotels . The cabs are quite reasonable and the subway is not too challenging. One final word though..if you have an afternoon/evening flight, allow extra time as the traffic is brutal in the PM and it takes extra time to get to the airport.

Room Tip: Upgrade to deluxe if you want to pamper yourself for not much more$$

Great position near the Palace Museum and Tienanmen Square.
Room on the fifth floor was good, however the carpet was in dire need of replacement: it was very dirty. Good, but expensive buffet breakfast.

This hotel is in a good location close to the forbidden city and about 15 minutes walk to the nearest metro station.

The rooms have all amenities that you would expect including a safe, free daily drinking water satellite TV.

The only criticism of the room that i have is the the bathroom looked very tired.

There was a good choice of both western and Chinese food for breakfast and free WiFi is available in the lobby and restaurant area.

The major criticism of the hotel that I have is that there only ever seemed to be 1 person in reception who could speak English so therefore getting information such as directions or recommendations was often difficult so we used our guide book most the time.

If i was back in the city and looking for a good value traditional hotel I would stay in the Jade Garden again.

Stayed 5 nights at the Jade Garden Hotel in September 2013. Got a deal at agoda for AU $75/night. Room was overall a comfortable stay. It's possible to walk to the Forbidden City (about 20 minutes walk). Free wifi is available in the lobby. Staff were friendly and helped us on a number of occasions with finding directions and speaking with taxi drivers.

Pros:
- wangfujing food market about 2 minutes walk from the hotel
- wangfujing shopping malls are a 5 minute walk
- complimentary 2 bottles of water each day
- spacious rooms

Cons:
- at times the hotel would smell like smoke/cigarettes
- quite a long walk to a train station (15 minutes)

Overall, I would stay here again for the price and proximity to wangfujing shops.

We only stayed two nights at the Jade Garden last week and were really impressed. Make sure you check out the full history of the building too - it played an important part in Beijing's history.
It's in a great location, about ten minute walk to the Forbidden City and also about five/ten minutes to Wangfujing shopping street, snack street, etc.
We had a room in the eastern part of the building looking out over the small parking area at the front. The room was clean, comfortable and full of everything you'd expect. The bed was comfy. It was really quiet considering we were on one of Beijing's busiest roads. The bathroom was really clean with great soft towels. The room didn't have wi-fi, but did have a PC running through the TV and there's also wi-fi in the main lobby. There was lots of free complimentary water to drink. The room also had an in-room safe which seems to be a rarity in China.
We had breakfast in the hotel one day, which although was very nice, was expensive in comparison to how much we had paid for the room. We only went for the continental breakfast, but there looked like there was a good international choice for the full breakfast.
There are lots of places nearby (local street cafes) to have lunches and evening meals.
The staff at reception were great. They were very helpful, they all spoke English very well. The security staff on the main gate were also great.

Room Tip: We stayed in one of the Executive rooms and booked this through Hotels.com. I think we got a special...

The only good thing about this hotel is its location, close to Wangfunjing street at at a (not so short) walking distance to Forbidden City.

Firstly, the front desk staff speaks a very poor English. Secondly, they feel very comfortable sleeping (literally) in front of their customers. (We were taking to one receptionist while the other was sleeping near her. We might have disturbed him actually, as he opened one eye to check who dares to do that during his working hours).

Last, but not least, their customer care is nonexistent. They just refused to call and book us a taxi for the next morning, given that we had a very early flight and wanted to be sure we get to the airport on time.

This taxi issue was only one of our extremely disappointing interactions that demonstrated the huge lack of customer care.

JadeGarden Hotel is good and comfortable four star hotel in the city centre.

Positive
- good location, closed to the Forbidden city, snack street, night market and shopping area, however quite far to the metro station - about 10 minutes walk)
- spacious, comfortable and clean rooms
- wifi connection in the lobby and wired internet in the room
- english speaking staff
- good local restaurant across the street

Negative
- far to the metro station
- it is not so easy to find the main hotel gate

You can find mixed reviews of this hotel but my room was OK, staff was helpful and I was satisfied

Room Tip: Superior rooms seems to be better
