This hotel has a great location. It is a 3-minute walk to the underground which gives you quick, cheap and easy access to the whole city without the hassles of using taxis. The room rates are good for its location.
That is the end of the good news. The rooms are cramped and lack any kind of cupboard. The walls are paper-thin. The ventilation system shares cigarette smoke among all rooms. The WiFi is free but comes and goes for no clear reason although it seems to work most of the time in reception so go there if you really need access but take your own device with you because the one desktop provided often cannot connect to the internet. The cable TV has only one English channel and it is State TV news, other channels are all in Chinese.
We rented 2 superior rooms for the family both of which were not cleaned during our stay although towels were changed every day. Both rooms looked worn with tatty carpets held together with tape and marked walls even though the hotel advertises itself as new this year. I failed to work out whether the in-room "cosy seating area" described by the hotel was the stool or the bed. The curtains were unable to completely cover the window which provided an early morning call as did a local tour guide who clearly needed his party out of bed early in the morning and spent a lot of time crashing up and down the corridor knocking doors and shouting.
For anyone travelling with walking problems or small children, be aware that the hotel involves a lot of steep stairs and no lift. For anyone who does not speak Chinese, be aware that the majority of hotel staff do not speak English although they do have someone they can telephone who speaks English. On one occasion a member of reception staff spoke amazingly good English but it is just a lottery whether such people happen to be on duty when you have a question.
Of course for these kinds of prices in such a great location we expected cheap and cheerful. But we only got cheap. This is a pity because this hotel has great potential which it could fulfil with just a little more attention to service. Sadly, at the moment, it is not paying that attention. Irritatingly, the hotel proudly displays in reception the "Super 8 Clean and Friendly Service Promise" almost every item of which it breaks.
