“All Around Excellent Bar in a Fast Developing Area of Beijing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

Xian is a new bar that is starting to gain in popularity in Beijing. It is located in the East Hotel, which is operated by Swire Hotels, the same owners of the Opposite House in Sanlitun. East and Xian are connected to Indigo Mall, an area of Beijing that a few years ago had very little in terms of decent restaurants and bars and is now developing quite quickly. Don't let this bars location in a hotel fool you, it is truly the best bar in this area of Beijing, quite close to Lido, 798 Art District and Wangjing.

Xian offers great daily happy hour specials from 5-8pm. Cocktails, wine and beer are buy one get a coupon for a second drink free (coupon can be used same day or on your next visit). Also, all thin crust pizzas are buy one get one free before 8pm. They are small personal size pizzas, but quite delicious!

Later in the evening when happy hour is over it gets a bit pricey, but there is great live music starting after 9pm. Last time I was at Xian, the band played a mixture of covers ranging from rock to blues to jazz. I was told by the waitress that most weeks there is live music each night Tue-Sat after 9pm.

Xian takes pride in its vast selection of whiskeys. With a selection of over 100 different bottles, it can truly be considered one of the better whiskey bars in Beijing. You can buy by the glass or also buy whole bottles and store them in the locker for your next visit. They also do some wicked cocktails and have some decent beers including Slow Boat on tap (see my review of Slow Boat Brewery Taproom.)

The layout of Xian is quite unique and very expansive. In the front there is a more open non-smoking room where the pizzas are made in a wood-fired oven and connecting rooms (where smoking is allowed) for the live music stage and cocktail bar. As you wonder further into the bar there are more private nooks with different types of chairs and tables as well as additional bars. If you make it downstairs, you will find another bar area that features one pool table, two foosball tables and a couple of arcade games including pinball.

To summarize, if you are looking to try a new bar in Beijing, definitely head out to Indigo Mall and give Xian a try for happy hour earlier in the evening or live music later at night!

“Wow - An amazing bar with amazing food !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

This place is worth making the effort to go to. The music is fantastic, especially the 70s style soul/R&B from the DJ in addition to the live band. Music is just at the right volume and totally inoffensive. It's not a restaurant as such but an all round entertainment area that offers great whiskey's, cocktails and other drinks plus a selection of wonderful food. The chef is Australian and in addition to pizzas and usual bar snacks offers set groups of tapas style food such as calamari and chorizo that is absolutely delicious. Try the set menu of tapas for a taste experience !
Bar manager and staff very knowledgable and friendly and a great mix of locals, tourists and business people. Highly recommended.

“Great live music!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

Great drink selection and menu, delicious ladies night martinis and a talented live band on every Wednesday to Sunday, from 8pm - midnight, playing a mix of new hits and oldies: blues, country, pop, rock and jazz. Oh, and did I mention they have a game room equipped with pool, foosball, pinball etc.

“Love this place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 6, 2013

If this bar wasn't part of a hotel then it would probably be one of the most popular in the City, but I feel it suffers slightly from the stigma of it being a 'Hotel Bar'.

They have some fantastic deals on most nights, such as 241 happy hours, free ladies nights and half price champagne on fridays. The drinks are fantastic and the service is excellent. The really selling point however has to be the decor.

Inside: The inside can seem a little intimidating to begin with as the layout has a lot of dark corridors connecting different small areas and bars. There is a free games room with snooker and video games and a pretty chilled upstairs bit. The toilets are what could be described 'industrial bling' (TM!).

Outside: The outdoor area is a great place in the summer with a number of sunken seating areas that can accommodated 10 or so people, and they do a great BBQ which is also great value. The pizzas served from the bar are also delicious too.

The atmosphere is nice with a good mix of locals and hotel guests.
