Went to Mutianyu on a Saturday, but was surprised to see that there weren't that many people around.
There were several options for people to get up to the great wall from the foot of the hill where the carpark is. You could either take the cable car up (one way or return) or walk up to the great wall section. I chose to walk up to the great wall section and this was the hardest part of the trip. The strenuous climb up consisted of a long flight of high steps that I would recommend the elderlies to avoid.
At the great wall section, the view is majestic and you cannot even start to fathom how such an architecture could be build back then. From the top of the great wall, you could chose to ride the toboggan down to where the carpark was. The ride cost 60rmb and lasted for ard 8 mins (depending on the speed you are traveling). During the ride you could also soak in the views around you too, a very worthwhile experience.

Great vistas at this location and not very crowded. Had to bull-doze you way through the vendors on the way down, but that is part of the interest.

Impressive view on far away portions of the Great Wall. We walked along the Wall but you could spend days if you want to go just a small part of what is accessible. Not too many tourist. Try to go up with the telesiege instead of the cable ca

Get the bus all the way up, perfect. Head to tower 14, and just keep climbing. You can go all the way to the top. It's hard, but soooooo worthwhile. And you even get to bargain for water, fruit and snacks on the way up, if you forgot to bring yours.
We saw a bride in a bright red, satin dress having her pictures taken on the wall - magnificent.
And there are drink sellers right near the top - hardy souls. I thought they deserved my patronage.
Such an achievement to climb so high, you feel like you are on top of the world.
It rained some of the time, but even that didn't matter.

Day one in the rain was disappointing yet still spectacular. The toboggan wasn't running due to the weather and we could only see 50 yds in either direction but still -- amazing! Had to adjust our travel schedule and return the next day when we awoke to clear skies and sunshine and it was so worth it. Amazing views, great shopping for local craft items, and the tobaggan run was totally fun!
