“Great Location!”
Reviewed November 13, 2013

Have stayed here twice, mainly because of the central location with a group of 8 other travellers. Its right in the middle of the Hutongs (back alleys) with some great market stalls, sensational street breakfasts and some local characters that make it a truly authentic experience. accommodation is basic but fine.

Well, first off it seems that no one in Beijing actually knows where this hotel is ? My cab driver got lost and asked for more yuan. Service was okay when I arrived and improved later, the room was simple but I was not looking for anything luxurious. My bathroom however was dreadful, no lighting and it flooded when I took a shower, but the rest was nice.

I liked the easy access by foot to the forbidden city and the temple of heaven.

Would not necessarily recommend it but if your a solo traveler not needing much then it's good.

Stayed here at the beginning of a G Adventures tour. Taxi had a hard time finding the hotel even with the address written in Chinese, he had to call them twice to get directions. At first the area does not look that nice, but its actually not bad and about a 10/15 walk to a good area with lots of shops and restaurants. My room did not look that clean, but I am used to western standards. My friend had blood on her sheets though. If you are starting a tour here (if it's similar to mine) the hotels only get better so don't worry too much.

I spent just under two weeks at the Far East Hostel, staying in the hotel portion of the building. It was a pain in the backside to find; no cab driver knew the address and even when I pointed it out on a map I still got dropped at the wrong place and had to wander around for an hour before I found it. If this happens to you, the advice I was given by a local is to ask a ricks haw driver for directions, as they know the Hutongs (back alleys) better than the cab drivers, although this probably relies on you being able to speak Mandarin.

The room was comfy enough, although the showers were pretty dirty, with mould and some sort of insect infestation. Because I was traveling alone, I spent a lot of time down in the hostel, chatting to the handful of western backpackers you find there; kitchens looked about as sanitary as my bathroom. Although I'm sure I searched the whole of the building, I never found the 'courtyard' the place advertises and the restaurant always looked so sad and empty (of both staff and customers) that I never actually ate there.

To be honest, it wasn't awful, but if I hadn't been waiting for a group tour to start from that hotel, I probably would have given it a miss and tried to find a cleaner hostel somewhere else.

I will start by saying don't book tours here because they're overpriced. If you can communicate OK with someone who doesn't speak English go to the wee wooden framed tour shop on the left as you are walking down towards the main road. We got a few quotes and the hotel was charging near enough double for exactly the same tour. In saying that it was the only place we stayed on our travels that charged to leave a bag for the day but it was only 5 yuan so can't argue with that.

This hotel was great for the money though, we paid a pittance for an en-suite twin room with a TV. Yeah it's a bit rundown but who cares when you just want a bed. You're not going to Beijing to sit in your room all day and if you are then you're doing it wrong!

The rooms were clean enough. The corridors and bathroom were a bit shabby and you have to walk around the hotel a bit to find strong enough WiFi but I refuse to give this hotel anything less than "Excellent" rating due to the cheapy cheap price, good service and good location. Y'now, it is true, you get what you pay for so if you expect a spotless bathroom and great looking decor then don't be stingy and stay here! If you're a reasonable person who understands this fact of life and doesn't mind turning the other cheek a wee bit to save loads of money then you'll love it here!

Only 15 mins walk from the subway, Tiananmen Square and 20 to Forbidden City. Either that or you can walk around through the maze of hutongs and be amazed by what you find. The fact that this hotel was a bit out of the way down a side street was great because I like walking around communities rather than high streets.

Loved it!

The single room i stayed in was really nice and the hotel location is quite good (20 min away from a subway station that is well located) but the staff was the most unfriendly i've ever seen! Telling me how long it would take me to walk from the hotel to the subway station almost killed them.... and asking them about where to take a shuttle bus back to the airport was just top much for them.

We travelled China in May through June and finished in Beijing to stay at the Far East Hotel. Disappointed by the quality of the rooms, pokey and unclean in parts. The shower curtain was yellowing at the edges and there were stains everywhere throughout the bathroom. The toilet paper is bizarre. Staff have a very limited knowledge of English and were unable to help with a number of requests. They charge you to hold your luggage on checkout day, which seemed unreasonable, given it was only a few hours. Limited taxi service nearby and they refuse to call you one on request. Would not go back.
