“Early evening visit”
Reviewed August 17, 2014

We went to see what it was all about - the trip there was an experience as you pass areas you wouldn't normally see - past the beautiful lakes and into a world of shops, stalls, bars and clubs. It was loud and had an amazing energetic vibe. We were there for just over a couple of hours and went to a cafe for a lite bite and on to a couple of bars - it was a great fun to sit and people watch. Recommended as it makes a change from the more sedate and fine dining at the hotels.

“Trendy night out in Beijing”
Reviewed August 7, 2014

If you have time, go here for a trendy night out. There are plenty of small bars, coffee shops, restaurants and quirky little shops. The bars all compete with each other with live music performances - quite a cacophony! Take the Beijing metro to Guloudajie. On the way there, take some photo's of the ancient Drum and Bell towers, splendidly lit up at night.
If you feel like a rickshaw ride through the ancient Hutongs (living quarters) surrounding the lakes, go to the ticket office directly opposite the Bell Tower. Lone rickshaw drivers hanging around the lake edges are mostly interested in making a quick few RMS's off unsuspecting tourists.

“Great Even During Daytime”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

I visited Hou Hai in the late afternoon, when more and more people were coming to visit the touristy stores, eat street food, and stroll around the lake. It was fun being in midst of the hustle and bustle of the lively crowd, and the lake was also beautiful too. You can rent a duck-shaped boat and explore the lake that way, or just walk around a section of it (the lake is a lot bigger than it seems on the map).

The street stores and the lively and noisy atmosphere in general reminded me of Nanluguoxiang's. I would recommend this place for anyone interested in street food, walking around lakes and decently-priced Chinese food.

“Local flavor or ex pat chow down?”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

If you can get dropped off at the south gate, walk up,the eastern side of the lake, go right . Where the lake starts to narrow there are a few mom and pop 7-11 stores that sell tall boys of Tsing tau beer for 15 RMB. Grab a seat on the lake wall and watch the world go by. Try to show up a little before the sun sets below the tree line and watch the neon lights start to glow across the lake. If you are looking for some relaxing roof top dinning, then cross two, foot bridges, go into the houtong and search for the "No Name Bar". Food is ok, but the views and the cool, night breeze will make it worth the RMB.
