“Great afternoon away from the hustle and bustle”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2013

We spent a wonderful afternoon in Hou Hai. Arrived just after lunch, and walked around the whole thing! It is a bit of a trek, but we broke it up with a boat ride, and an impromptu table tennis match in the park with a local family. Later had a wonderful dinner at a lovely courtyard restaurant and left just as dusk was settling. Looks like it is a happening place for drinks later with out children as well.

“A fun place to eat, hear music and cruise the lake”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2013

This laid-back lake region is simply fun! Restaurants crowd the shores, with many open to the street. Lots of lights and live music, teens and couples stroll around eating ice pops, drinking sodas, and cruising the lake in small, low power boats. Food ops range from pizza, to steak, to classic Chinese. The lake is full of fish and wildlife, and seems very ethereal at its far ends.

We truly enjoyed hearing 60's era folk songs in Chinese. Who would have expected that?

“A different side of China”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2013

Enjoy a night out here and you'll see a unique side of China. Here, the people are outgoing, expressive, musical, and very happy. So many different places to sit and enjoy a drink and listen to live music.

Walk-around a while before settling on a place. And, don't be afraid to get up and see/hear multiple places.

“Food, music and Chinese fun”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 22, 2013

The Back Lakes are a pleasant and almost relaxing area of Beijing, with nice views, a few interesting old buildings and plenty of restaurants, cafes and bars.
In the evening this is one the best nightlife areas, with hundreds of places to eat and drink and bars with amazing and varied live music scene (chinese bands can be very talented even if you don't understand). Hou Hai is the largest lake and here you can also find Chinese enjoying traditional evening activities (dancing, karaoke, singing, martial arts, kites flying, fishing, boating, swimming) while Qian Hai is a more 'Western' clubbing and drinking area. The streets at the north and east sides of the lakes are full of trendy and cheap fashion stores popular with young Chinese.

“Scenic nightlife, lakeside views at central Beijing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 19, 2013

Just walking around the Beihai Lake is refreshing change to the endless amount of cars filling the city streets. In the evening, there are rows of bars to choose from, if you want to have a drink and watch the people go by. Sure the places are a bit more expensive than the average bars around the town, but hey, why wouldn't they be. Rickshaw rides, restaurants, karaoke bars and live music shows make this destination worth a visit when you want to relax during a hasty week of walking through all the must-see-attractions.
