Peking duck is probably one of the most famous dishes to come out of Beijing, and what better place is there to enjoy this than 1949 The Hidden City. Tucked away in the back streets far from the madding crowd, this serene restaurant is one of the "warehouse" style buildings that make up the compound enclosed area, along with art galeries and other restaurants.
Preparation of the ducks are in open view to the seated guests (through glass), and after ordering in the plush surroundings, the arrival of the chef and your duck is announced by traditional gong as it is presentated and sliced at you table; to savour the taste makes your visit well worth the effort. The overall menu is varied and has a decent choice of dishes, but the duck is a must for all given the location. The restaurant better caters for larger groups with tables able to sit ten comfortably with more at a slight squeeze, and booking is a definate must if you want to visit.
