“Good prices, great location!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 10, 2011

The Sunworld is in an excellent location, is great value for money, is clean and comfortable.

This hotel was my base for sightseeing and touring Beijing. I stayed for seven nights so was conscious that I needed to be happy with my choice of accommodation, There's nothing worse than sticking it out in a room that is less than ideal. A bad hotel can be survived for one night, but not for seven! I can confidently say that I was pleased with the Sunworld.

My first observation, and one that is a highlight for a Chinese hotel, was that the bed was SOFT! Although the firm beds of China are not uncomfortable, it really is bliss to find a hotel with a mattress you can sink into. After four weeks travelling around China, the Sunworld's soft bed was welcome.

The rooms are a good size, and I quite liked the little 'reading nook' I had in my room. Sort of like a tiny sun room, or a built in balcony. Just a nice spot to put your feet up at the end of the day.

The room included free internet, a must for me when I travel. It's my lifeline to home. Internet connection was both wired and wireless, although I found the wifi a bit weak and slow. You could get by if you had to, but the wired method was far more reliable.

The staff were generally friendly and helpful. Enough English to get by. The concierge was always on hand to help get a taxi, although note that 8:00/8:30am is a busy time and there can be a wait for a cab. Other times it was fine, no more than a minute or two wait.

The hotel has a 'tour/service' desk. I didn't use it for tours so can't comment on that aspect; however, I did get them to book two train tickets for me. The tickets came through the same day and all went smoothly. Very helpful and much easier than navigating the busy stations.

Wangfujing is just around the corner (one minute walk), which has all the Western escapes if you need them; MacDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut and Haagen Dazs. Having said that though, forget the burgers and fries and head for Quanjude for a divine duck! When walking south on Wangfujing, go left at the little street about mid-way down the pedestrian area. Thh four stories of duck restaurant promises not to disappoint, and I can assure you, it won't!

Immediately across the road from St Joseph's church on Wangfujing is a little tour booth. Great for tours to the wall, around the city etc. Close to the hotel and theor tours will pick up direct from Sunworld.

Overall my stay at Sunworld was pleasant. Great value for money (especially in Bejing which can be pricey), great location, and comfortable rooms.

Duration of stay - 7 nights
Room - Deluxe king
Would I return? - Yes

Room Tip: The 'deluxe' rooms are generous in size and include free internet.

Average quality hotel with a decent sized room (compared to Hong Kong average!) and OK cleanliness. The restaurant staff couldn't speak English and seemed baffled by my sign language when pointing to the menu pictures when we asked for dinner on our first night. But they were young and inexperienced and seemed frightened of foreigners, so I didn't blame them. But a truly international standard 4* hotel would not have had these problems. We couldn't find many restaurants nearby though and the hotel's map of the area was unreadable and misleading. Still, on our second night the restaurant next door proved good once you'd navigated the hawkers on the door who wanted you to see their "art exhibition" upstairs - just say no firmly - and make your way through to the rear of the building for excellent and cheap food. Breakfast was busy and noisy but there was plenty of Chinese and Western food on offer so no complaints. Don't pay extra for an 'American' breakfast - nobody checks how much you eat. All in all OK but I bet there are better places to stay in Beijing. We booked this through China Highlights.

The best thing about this hotel is the location: a couple of minutes walk from famous Wangfujing Street, opposite China Construction Bank, close to good restaurants and within a short taxi ride of attractions like Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Mao's Mausoleum. A short walk from the hotel will lead you to small streets and alleys filled with local Chinese shopping, eating and living: a great way to see daily life in a new country.

I found the room spotless and the staff friendly (for China). Breakfast was standard hotel fare with a variety of Asian and western options. Wifi was not very good in my room (I found that it only worked in my shower recess) but was great in the foyer.

The hotel is a good option for a clean bed, hearty breakfast and a base to explore Beijing. A word of caution though: as Beijing taxi drivers are not the sharpest we met, it's important to take a hotel business card with you if you want to get back.

Wow what a dump! Thought corridor was bad enough, but total horror when we opened the bedroom door.
if totally out of date was bad enough, the room was poky, carpet disgusting, bed linen did not look fresh, black marks all over radiator and up bedroom wall, hole in wall, plaster hanging off, loose wires hanging in bathroom. this was my sixthy birthday and had asked for nice room. complained bitterly and was told only had one room left, take it or leave it. as we had show booked we did not really have chance to find somewhere else. second room marginally netter but still awful.

We stayed for 3 nights over the National Day holiday. Our rooms was a decent size & had all the amenities we needed & would expect from a 4* hotel. Bathroom tiles were a little worn & old looking, but the bathroom was clean & shower was good. We had a non-smoking room & couldn't smell any stale smoke either in the rooms or on the corridor as mentioned by previous reviewers. The mini bar was expensive but there is a 7-11 over the road to stock up on drinks & snacks. Breakfast was very good - lots of choice of both Chinese and western items. Omlettes / eggs made freshly to order.

The staff were not particularly friendly or forthcoming but they dealt with any requests efficiently. We didn't feel the concierge was very good - he gave us wrong information on 2 occassions.

The best thing about the hotel is the location - 2 mins walk to Wangfujing Street, 5 mins walk to the nearest subway station. It is in a great location for exploring downtown Beijing with a multitude of shops, restaurants & sites on your doorstep. Overall, a very positive experience. We would happily stay here again.
