“Gotta see this”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

An extravagant Summer Resort, built for Emperors. Empress Dowager, Cixi, in the late 19th century was given money to spend on improving the navy. Instead she built a huge Marble Boat on the grounds of the Summer Palace for entertaining. This diversion of funds may have contributed to the inability of China to defend herself from the British and French, and the loss of power at the turn of the 20th century.

We went during a national holiday, in October, and it was rather crowded, so it was not as wonderful an experience as we had hoped. But that was due to the huge crowds, not the lack of things to see. You may wish to see this in late fall when many tourists have gone home.

This is a good attraction for the disabled as there are extremely few stairs to negotiate.

A "Bucket List", Gotta See, attraction.

“Another beautiful Beijing attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 20, 2013

The Summer Palace is a beautiful sprawling complex that needs at least a half day to fully enjoy. Be prepared for large crowds from May through the end of October, and, be prepared to walk a lot. The Summer Palace is best enjoyed with the assistance of a knowledgeable tour guide who can explain the history of the Palace. I recommend AnnieLi private tour guide in Beijing. The Summer Palace has a very wide array of ancient Chinese Architecture including Pavillions and Paifangs and also is famous for the Long Corridor, Marble Boat and Seventeen Arch Bridge. there are many spectacular photo opportunities here. I recommend entering at the east entrance, working your way north and then west through the palace grounds, and taking a boat ride accross Kunming Lake to the Seventeen Arch Bridge

“An peaceful close by the city”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

A short drive from the city, is the Summer Palace of the Emperors. It is a pllllace of great beauty with a lake and bridges, agodas and trees. Walk through the park or take a boat ride on the lake. Enjoy the peace and tranquility as the emperors did.

“Beautiful and peaceful”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 19, 2013

The summer palace is beautiful! It's a huge area next to the Kunming lake where you can walk around or do a small boat trip. There's also a few tempels and building you can visit. In summer time it's supposed to be really crowded but I was there in november and it wasn't too busy. Really worth a visit! Take the metro there, it's a 5 minute walk from Xijuan station.
