Owner description: Once a summer retreat for emperors, this 290-acre park is still a retreat for the crowd-weary tourist, who can relax here or stroll around ancient pavilions, mansions, temples, bridges and huge lake, stopping occasionally at a shop or tea-house.

I actually enjoyed this more than the Forbidden City, which was extremely crowded when I was there. It helped that it was a beautiful, coolish spring day, and there was time to loiter along the lake.

We visited the Summer Palace as part of a private tour. The tour guide was excellent. The grounds were very nice but crowds kept us from fully enjoying the experience. It takes about an hour to get through the palace. We enjoyed this more than the Forbidden City.

Cool place. Google the story of the Dragon lady (the owner of the palace).
It has a lake, paintings along the lake, and huge river rocks.
You are not missing out if you can't visit this attraction. I think the forbidden city is more significant than this palace.

I guess I start every review of a Chinese landmark with, it gets crowded, but your best bet to avoid crowds is to get there early. We really enjoyed the trip and sights. You will see folks from every corner of the world. Amazing experience!

Still, a romantic destination, but fog kept us from getting a really good view and photographs. There were a lot of people there also.
