Guide books do not explain how unique this place is to be in the center of town. One of our favorites in Beijing.

The beauty of the old Beijing customs are visible in the morning before the crowds arrive. Tai chi, walking backwards, men singing opera all in an oasis in the busy city.

We enjoyed a Tai Chi lesson while in the park, which is just beautiful. Very well maintained, shady, and pleasant. Enjoyed watching the local people play musical intruments, play chinese checkers, and dance.

The Temple of Heaven is very large, even larger than the Forbidden City. It was very helpful to purchase an audio guide, because it teaches you more about whatever section you are near in the temple. Even if you do not purchase a guide, you can read the signs that are placed around the temple. There was a section that the audio guide explained was the empress's changing room for morning rituals at the temple. There, we took a picture of us dressed in the clothes of the emperor and empress. The structures at the temple were gorgeous. The landscape was beautiful. I totally recommend visiting the Temple of heaven.

I was there very early in the morning, and all the old folks were out exercising, doing tai chi, playing games, stretching etc. In the lovely morning light, with the city waking up, it was a great place to be.
And then into the Temple of Heaven itself, very nice, spacious, great to see. Well worth the visit.
Great thing for kids is the circular walls, one person stands on onside of the courtyard, another person stand son other side of the courtyard, and if you shout to each other you can hear each other, your voice traveling along the circular wall...
