Owner description: Built in 1420 with a total area of 270 acres, this is the largest building for religious worship in China, which was originally used by the Ming and Qing emperors to pay homage to Heaven and to pray for a year of rich harvest.

Large imposing structure. Interesting with steps and lots of walking to cover all the grounds. Everything in China is LARGE! Elderly Chinese playing games, ball room dancing, hacky sack,
And all sorts of exercise. Everyone looked fit and were having fun. They didn't mind if we joined in, in fact they seemed to enjoy our attempts. Just keep walking there's more to see.

Take a peaceful and restful walk through the beautiful gardens and visit the temple etc. Be aware that if you walk all the way through that it is rather a long way but you can get off the subway at one end and go on at another station at the other. Remember to take some water. Plenty of photo opportunities.

We visited the Temple of Heaven on a national holiday in China so I'm not sure if the same would apply on normal days but it was great to see people playing games and enjoying time with their families. Unfortunately we arrived after the temple itself closes so we could only view it through a gab between the doors :-( I'd recommend visiting during the day so you can see the temple in its full glory if you can (but if not the park is worth a visit in the evening if you're short on time).

The temple was very impressive, although visitors were not permitted inside. My visit to the park was cut short because of rain, and it would be very nice to visit in the Spring when the flowers were in full bloom.

This is a fun place to visit as the walk up to the temple of heaven is laden with local chinese playing ethnic games and practicing dance and tai chi. The Temple itself is beautiful and very interesting to look at.
