We went in the morning, knowing that the park was open but the temple was not. We hoped we could at least photograph the temple. The walk around the park was a very interesting experience that we all enjoyed. However, there aren't any good viewpoints of the Temple unless you go inside of the wall. This was disappointing, but we still enjoyed our visit.

Nice enough with temples and such but you are forced to progress in certain directions and return is often not permitted. When it came time to leave it was very difficult to orientate yourself back to the begining and subsequently we left by another gate and had to accept the overpriced offer of a rickshaw to the metro.

Make sure you buy the 'through' ticket (35Y roughly $6) which gives you access to all areas insde complex. we went on a public holiday so the place was crowded, however it was interesting to see the locals at leisure, hanging out, practicing their singing, tai-chi, whip cracking! Unfortunately very smoggy, photos would have been spectacular with a blue sky!

The Temple of Heaven was well worth a visit. The whole area was massive, the grounds themselves were worth wandering through, seeing the locals practicing their martial art and game skills.
We purchased headsets which were very reasonably priced at 40 RMB, plus a 100 RMB deposit each. The amazing thing about them was that they were GPS enabled, so wherever we walked the headset would know our exact location, and tell us where to look and what to see.
This really brought the whole place alive giving a detailed understanding of everything that we were seeing.
The BYO toilet paper applies here, like in most places and the toilets are far from heaven, although waiting for the disabled one meant, avoiding having to squat.

Beautiful place to check out if you have much time in Beijing. You will see many temples on your visit. If pressed for time, go to summer palace instead
