If you want to get to any part of the Great Wall from Beijing and dont feel like dealing with public transport, go with John Ping! He drove us to the Jiankou section of the Great Wall a couple weeks ago and the whole trip was great. He picked us up at our hotel in the morning, as scheduled, and drove us to the section where we wanted to start hiking. Since he does this almost daily, he's really familiar with the different sections of the wall, the routes to get there, and how to avoid traffic. He speaks great English as well, which is very helpful and makes for an enjoyable chatty ride. He charged us RMB700 for a round-trip from our hotel to the wall and back, and just waited for us while we hiked for about six hours. Very nice and highly recommended!

Getting there: We decided to use public transportation to travel to Badaling from downtown Beijing. First, we took the subway from the Tiananmen Square area to the Xizhimen Subway station for a remarkably inexpensive fare of 2 RMB one way ($0.31). We left the Xizhimen Station, walked around the corner to the left, and then walked right into the Beijing North Railway Station where we made our train connection. A second class ticket to Badaling costs 14 RMB ($2.15) one way. The train ride takes just over one hour and stops at the Badaling Railway Station, which is a little more than 1 km from the actual entrance to the Great Wall Cable Car entrance.

What to do: We bought one way cable car tickets for 40 RMB along with the entrance fee of 45 RMB. In this way, we saved our walking legs for the wall instead of using them to get up to it 
After getting off of the cable car we ascended to No. 8 North Tower, which is the highest point on this segment of the Great Wall. From there we walked toward No. 12 North Tower and continued until we reached the end of the restored section (1 km from No. 8 North Tower). This walk was excellent because fewer people walked on this part of the Great Wall than on the No. 4 North Tower side. From here we walked back about half way to No. 12 North Tower where there is an exit walkway that leads down to a large area where merchants sell all sorts of tourist stuff. At the point where this area meets the main road, we followed the road west through the pass and continued on back to the Badaling Railway Station.

Took the 919 bus between the station at Badaling and Deshengmenwith each trip costing approximately RMB4.50. The bus trip took around 1.5hours to reach Badaling. Took me around 2.5hours in completing the whole round of the great wall in Badaling. This place has been restored and catered well enough for tourists here and as a result, the whole place is packed with people. Paid the entrance fee of RMB45. Easily accessible by train or bus. Went to train station at Beijing North Railway station, reached there at 9am and train tickets bound to leave for Badaling at 9:30am has been sold out. The best is either buy the ticket a day earlier or simply reach the station early in the morning to buy the train ticket. You can really get nice views of the great wall while hiking around. Just get prepared and wear proper footwear as the hike might be very very steep! Good experience! While hiking, you can take a rest and enjoy the magnificent views around you! Great wall is a MUST to visit if you are taking a holiday in Beijing.

the badaling section is about an hours drive from Beijing. The climb can be a little arduos at some areas and downright tough at other areas. All in all one needs to be in pretty good shape to climb the wall, but once on top the view is quite marvellous. Even along the way some areas especially in the middle offer some beautiful vistas. Steps are narrow and uneven in parts, so it may be useful to hold the rails. Dont forget to carry some drinking water. There are some vendors midway actually closer to the top section. The bottom has souvenir and curio shops, small restaurants etc. The rest rooms are not very clean The area can get quite crowded as many buses come in daily. Try to get there early to beat the crowds.

As a single traveller for my first 5 days in china I booked two day tours and stayed locally to the forbidden city so I could walk the area on my days alone.
I was very impressed with the novotel hotel, i stayed at the peace, and the holiday inn..
The staff were friendly and helpful, and spoke English

The day trips were good value for money, but i always feel the sales pitch pressure when they take you to 'visit' the jade factor, silk factory, pearl factory and tea house...4 sales pitches in 2 days was a bit much.

I loved the great wall..it was covered in snow, icy and dangerous to walk on, but i did it anyway, exhausted and feeling like I had conquered the world.

The forbidden city, temple of heaven and summer palace were a bit boring..but I loved the Ming tombs..
I later returned to the forbidden city and other local sights on my own and enjoyed it more.

I would say if you are passing this way you must have two days at least to see the wall and some of the city...

I am glad i have seen it..but I don't think I will be back..china is not my cup of tea!
