“OK, if you need to be near University”
Reviewed November 8, 2013

I was attending a conference at Peking U and organizers put me in a room here. I was in one of the back buildings probably the building where they stuck secretaries and junior staff when this was the spot for big conferences in old communist times.

Other reviewers have complained about size of place. I had no problem with that. My room was big enough - a bit 1980's in feel, but I didn't mind. When I pointed out to front of house - who speak little English- my mini-bar was empty they told me to go to a store and buy what I needed. there were plenty of stores around, so no problem - and much cheaper.

I appreciated a conversion plug in the room. Wi-fi is only available in reception area - a drawback - but someone on my floor was using an open network in his room and so I just jumped on his connection.

100 metres to Subway (line 4) gave this hotel a certain convenience. I was two stops to University, four stops to the Zoo (Pandas and street market), about 20 minutes to Tian anmen Square (1 interchange) half hour to Beijing South and fast trains to Shanghai (no interchange).

Drawback for me was no decent restaurant in the area. Hotel has several average ones on complex but I wanted to get out and about. Still Beijing Subway is 2 yuan a ride - around 23 pence - so who cares?

Price was reasonable - about 65 quid a night all in. There are more convenient places to stay, however, and next time I'm in Beijing I will try one.

During my recent visit to Beijing I made a mistake moving from the Peninsula hotel to the Beijing Friendship Hotel for its close proximity to Peking University where I attended a reunion. I thought it would be easier to get back to my hotel room after late night parties at the university. That was a big mistake.
The Friendship Hotel consists of several buildings within a walled compound. I can only speak for the building I stayed in. The room was old and badly in need of capital improvement. My room's electric circuit went bad for half an hour and a service man had to be called to fix it. The breakfast room was a long walk away in another building. Everything seems oddly configured. The front desk people are not very professional. Wifi service is only available in the building's lobby, not in guest rooms. The lack of wifi in the room made my iOS devices bricks.
Avoid this place if one can.

Room Tip: bring your Airport Express router to create a private wifi in your room.

It's a huge compound hotel buildings. Make sure to be aware the location of each hotel according to your convenience or else you will end up finding your way out or your way in. The whole area is so refreshing due to its vast trees and landscape. Truly, a picturesque of Ancient China Infrastructure.

I spent 3 nights here during a business visit. As others have pointed out, this is not a single hotel building but a complex of multiple buildings, not all connected. The inconveniences included small room in an old building, empty minibar, hard mattresses, 400 m walk to breakfast in another building,(expensive, separately charged and not including cappuccino or omelet), often non-existent internet link even using the cable, payment required for the private fitness center, and indifferent staff. On the up side, the bathrooms seemed to have been recently renovated. If you are on an official visit, you may not have other options. Otherwise, try to find somewhere else.

Note that if you cross the main road in front of the hotel there is a Starbucks for some real coffee, which opens at 0700.

Room Tip: Try to get a room in the main building near the entrance, in which case breakfast is upstairs.

I stayed in this hotel end July 2013. This is a complex with several buildings, interconnected by long corridors. The main building has been renovated and has been granted 5 stars. The other parts have not but still keep 4 stars, Chinese standards. I stayed in the 4 stars' part. Rooms are big enough and clean. Bathrooms look, however, a bit old. Staff at the reception desk are quite polite and ready to help. At the reception of the 5 stars' part (main building at the entrance of the complex) you can find some facilities such as a currency exchange office which is open until late in the evening (23h00) and a public phone when you can use phone-cards for long-distance calls (e.g., 100 RMB/20 minutes call to Europe). The hotel complex is not far from a subway station, walking distance (line 4). Access to the swimming-pool of the complex costs around 10 euros but is for free for the clients of the 5 stars brand.

Room Tip: far from the elevators (a bell rings every time doors open...)

It is a nice hotel with all the usual amenities that you can ask for. Service staff are polite and speak reasonable english. Checking in at of the hotel was a breeze and the front desk took the effort to explain the charges and the hotel facilities, which I found quite pleasant. The conceige was also helpful in arranging for transportation and sightseeing attractions. Overall, a decent hotel stay during my business trip.

Its a decent hotel with clean rooms and facilities for its price (although I got a group discount price). The cleaning staff is good, but bathrooms might have leaking pipes or flushes that work at their will. The cleaning staff is also very honest and sincere, we had a guy who forgot his watch in his room as he shifted into another hotel, but when he dropped but 3 days later to casually enquire about the watch it was there at the reception with a tag of his name. The watch was spotted by the cleaning staff and submitted to the reception. I was impressed by that.

The staff are all trainee and don't know a thing about anything and hardly speak english, so you have to figure everything out on your own, that is my only major complaint.
