I would rate the hotel between Average and Very Good (i.e. just good) ...
I have been regularly staying at the Beijing International Hotel for a few months (essentially every weekend) for work; it is MUCH better than the Beijing News Plaza hotel across the street. This hotel tends to get very busy because of the Convention Center next door and numerous conferences throughout the week.
The hotel is generally clean above the 15th floor; the lower floors are much older decor and tend to have that old Beijing (everyone smoked in their room) feel. The "executive" rooms are generally double the price but significantly better than the budget rooms.
Check in / check out staff are typical Beijingers ... rude and/or lazy and/or inept ... I've personally witnessed them in verbal confrontations with guests (swearing as well) which puts you off a bit.
The hotel has a few restaurants ... the buffet is big by western standards but get packed with locals looking for all you can eat crab; the revolving restaurant on the roof is ridiculously overpriced and pretty bad ... I havnt been to any of the Chinese places at the hotel so can't comment on them.
The location is a bit odd ... its between the Jianguomen and Dongdan subway stations so be prepared to a walk to get anywhere. Taxi service is pretty good at the hotel ... max 15 min wait for a cab (typically 5-10 min) except early in the morning they are lined up waiting for the airport crowd.
The Henderson center is across the street which has a pizza hut ... underground supermarket ... macdonalds ... starbucks ... HSBC ...
