“Great Shangri-la Experience”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 6, 2011

We usually stay at the Kerry Center when in Beijing. As the Kerry Center was being renovated, this time we tried the Traders, just a hundred meters from the Kerry.
The signs that it is a 4 star hotels are 1) Rooms are medium size, not as big as others shangri-la, but clean and confortable. 2) Prices are also much cheaper than other Shangri-la. For the rest, it really feels as a 5 star hotel.
We stayed at the club floor, and breakfast and evening cocktail are superb and amongst the best in 4/5 star hotels I had in other cities.
Staff are attentive, smiling and always very nice. They also try to make an effort to learn your name.
Fitness center and Spa are a bit on the small size, but then you can also use the World Centre fitness and Spa, so it is not really a bad thing.
Rooms on the garden can be noisy (if you are as sensitive as I am to noise) due to the air conditioning ventilators, but rooms on the street are not noisy, thanks to the fact that there is little traffic on that road, and to double windows, both double glazed!
Location is perfect, close to Silk Market, embassy area, and a short taxi ride to every where.

Stayed here for a week on a business trip. SERVICE at hotel was excellent. They arranged for example full day taxi service for us to great wall, forbidd en city, and pandas. ROOMs are quite basic, but executive lounge offers large variaty snacks and drinks after heavy day. Famous silk-market is only 1€ taxi ride away. Also connections to the new technology factory area is fast.

Room Tip: Choose executive room, this give you more quiet breakfast and snack place. Worth it!

Overall a nice stay at this place, room is very clean. The staff cares and greets you.

Location is great, only a few minutes by foot to the subway.

Food for breakfast was great, a great mix of chinese and western food.

Very comfortable beds as well.

The hotel has free Internet, yay!

We were touring China in June for our honeymoon and chose Traders because of its reputation. However, we were left feeling let down by what I would have considered the basics.
Good points:
The location is ok as the hotel for us was just a base. If you are doing your own exploring of Beijing on foot you'd be best with something more central. The breakfast is vast and you will always find something to suit whether is be continental, full english (beware of the sausage tho as they taste like hot dogs!), or traditional chinese. Walking distance of a few shopping malls if that is your thing.
Bad points: Room is very small. Bathroom is also small and quite poor standard. The hotel has no atmosphere and the bar had ran out of 3 brands of white wine which were all the cheapest western wine (they did have local wine but I wasn't keen) and the next western wine wasn't cheap at £40 bottle. I'm not sure if I can believe that this could be the case for a hotel of this size and was left wondering if this was an attemot to rip you off.
Can't comment on the food other than the breakfast and ended up at the China World (the tallest building) which is opposite the traders, and found our wallet £300 lighter after scallops, wagyu steaks and a bottle of wine so beware if you're on a budget lol!!!
Overall, I'd probably not recommend the Trader and i'm sure that we could have found a better hotel for the same price. Beijing is an amazing place to visit and the hotel couldn't spoil that !

A local colleague recommended the Traders Hotel for a short business trip in Beijing. I associate Traders brand with reputable business hotel with reasonable rate but after my stay here, I must say that Traders Hotel in Beijing's Chaoyang District is not representative of the usual Traders Hotel such as those in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore. The taxi driver had no problems locating the hotel which is a low rise structure located in a slip road behind the World Trade Conventino Centre. Although I arrived about 4pm in the off-peak period ie no trade exhibitions and there were five or six front desk staff, I was kept waiting (standing with luggage in tow due to limited seats at the lobby) for a good 45 minutes before I was assigned a twin room (I had requested for king) on 3/F which overlooked the carpark.

While the room was clean, the furnishings were obviously dated. The bathroom was spacious but cold and spartan with tiled walls that remind one of those utilitarian ones in public sports facilities and swimming pools.

This hotel is suitable only if your office is next door and you're not travelling out to meet clients, or if you're attending a trade exhibition or conference there. I had to pay for the limousine in the mornings as it was near impossible to get a cab on weekday mornings and evenings when I was there. The hotel is linked to a mall that obviously caters to the office crowd with most shops and eateries shuttered after 7.30pm. On my 2nd night there when I insisted on going out in a metered taxi, I was told to be prepared to wait for up to an hour or more. Indeed it was shortly after 8pm that I managed to hop into one when guests returned to the hotel. In short, no taxi if no guests coming to the hotel. I was stuck in heavy traffic for a good 35 minutes before the taxi managed to get past the maze of lanes before reaching a main road intersection onto a highway. In short, you either pack a takeway dinner before heading back to the hotel or be prepared to have dinner inside the hotel.

Those with a daily fitness routine will be disappointed with the Traders Hotel as well. There is no swimming pool, though you can trawl through the mall in your flannel bathrobe to reach the affiliated China World Hotel to use its swimming pool. The gym is a farce! It is in fact a shop facing the elevator lobby that houses a dismal range of gym machines. Guests returning to their rooms are given a fish tank view of anyone using the treadmills and bikes through the glass-fronted windows of the so-called 'gym'.

Overall, this hotel is grossly overpriced as it reminds me of a no-frills cheap motel, except that you have to pay CNY800++ room only tariff even during off-peak season.

location was convenient next to a mall but it is strange- the moment you step out into the mall, there is a very strong toxic smell-like it was newly renovated and the place is not aired.
food was not consistent depending on what you order.
strong room refreshener smell the moment you step into the lobby gives me a bad headache.
the cafe plays the same irritating loud pop music everyday- still ringing in my head. why can't they just play soft musical pieces? my room smells of cigarette even tho' it was on non-smoking floor- perhaps that explains the excessive spraying of room refreshener everywhere.
if you're looking for a quiet place to rest and breathe well, give this a miss.
