“Great location near Tiananmen Square & Forbidden City”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Peninsula hotel is a great hotel to stay in to tour anywhere around Beijing.
My husband and I stayed here for four nights and had a great experience with the location and great restaurants on the property...try Huang Ting and Jing. .
The only thing that I didn't care for so much was the fact that the service staff was a little unaccomodating. I remember having breakfast one morning and since we came in at the tail end of the ending time, we were made to rush and get all the buffet food at once. We couldn't enjoy our $30pp breakfast fully and at peace...
Also room service ends at about 10:30pm and they only have very limited menu items available thereafter. e restSince our flight came in later, we could have used a meal in our room.
During check out, the process was also painfully slow. Three different people tried to figure out that their credit card machine didn't work.
Other than that, the rooms were a good size and it is a five star property which has all the amenities one could ask for while our tour guide waited.

An excellent location; exceptionally friendly staff; nice rooms; we always book a Club Floor room. (Yes, there are other hotel choices, like the nearby Hilton, as well as those that are less expensive; however, when traveling in Beijing and Hong Kong, the Peninsula is our choice)

Within walking distance are ample shopping opportunities. There are two stores that specialize in tea; one is diagonally across the street, the other on the hotel side opposite the other store. Try Chrysanthemum. If you've been traveling before getting to Beijing, there is a beauty parlor across the street that does a better than adequate job. (There is a person that that speaks English to articulate your needs to the hairdresser.) In addition to staying at an exceptional hotel and eating there, nearby restaurant choices abound. The restaurant Dadong (a must if you are going to indulge in Peking duck...and you must have Peking duck while in Beijing) opened its third location a few short blocks from the hotel. Dadong is "the" top Peking Duck restaurant in Beijing...and yes, there is a difference how the restaurants prepare duck.

Booking a Club Floor room at the Peninsula is highly recommended. One main reason is it includes breakfast and use of their lounge. Although you can have breakfast "downstairs" in their main dining- room where there are "zillions" of breakfast choices, the breakfast available in the lounge "ain't shabby". Check out the lounge breakfast first; then go down and check the main dining-room buffet and then decide at which one you'll eat. Additionally, during the day the lounge has coffee/tea and light snacks. In late afternoon there is a larger spread with a full blown "happy hour" lasting far more than an hour. That spread has high end snacks, enough to make a meal! In addition to the hotel business department/room, in the lounge there is one room with a single computer (not overly used by guests) allowing free internet connection.

In short, a stay at the Peninsula will be an enjoyable experience.

The hotel is lovely. It has it's own designer shopping mall and spa. However there wasn't really any comfortable seating in the lounge and it felt impersonal. It has all the facilities you could wish for in your room including a flatscreen tv in the bathroom. Excellent breakfast area and a lovely restaurant, very expensive but quiet and good service. The staff seemed helpful and the doorman will flag a cab for you. I did find it amusing that Graff the jewellers and Harry Winston jewellers and Tiffany jewellers were right under your nose as soon as you arrive, but then if you are like me the shops stopped being the focus of my attention and I soon concentrated on being in Beijing. It did put me off having all the famous designer houses in the hotel at first, I wondered if I was going to have to dress up for dinner, but I needn't have worried, most people were in jeans and tops and ready for sightseeing or eating and going to bed.

Room Tip: We were facing the road, it did not bother me but bothered my husband. They may be quieter at the b...

We stayed here in September 2012 for 4 nights as part of a tour group. The room was a good size, staff were very helpful, especially the doormen and doorwomen, always ready with a smile. Wi-fi was free. The hotel location is very good, close to shops, restaurants and Beijing attractions. We had breakfast at the hotel and it was excellent.

A Real 5 star Hotel in the center of Bejing,

Worth every euro spent, go to eat in the commercial Center closeby, in Hotel the food is quite expensive.

Only 1 km from Forbidden city, the old bejing is few hundred meters closeby.
The closest metro station is about 1Km far, but a nice walk worth it :)

Although the up-grades were lovely in the Peninsula Shanghai and Hong Kong, the Beijing Peninsula offered a club floor which we fully used and appreciated. From checking in with their incredibly friendly and helpful staff (Lyndon and Mary), to their full Western buffet breakfasts and their happy hour treats (home made chocolates!), we really appreciated this perk.
The location is terrific.

Room Tip: go for the club rooms if you can.

We stayed 5 nights in late March 2013. We stayed in a 6th floor room facing the front of the hotel. We could hear street noise and construction noise all day, although everything quieted down at night. Some of the construction noise seemed like it was coming from inside the hotel. The lobby is very much like a Rodeo Drive shopping mall with shops like Chanel, Harry Winston (who buys expensive diamond jewelry in a hotel lobby?) and Louis Vuitton. During the day buses disgorge bus loads of tourists looking to shop in the high end stores in the lobby. No cafe, gift shop or anyplace you could buy aspirin or toothpaste if needed.

We ordered room service 2X and the portions were generous and nicely presented. Front desk staff is helpful and professional.

Hotel is very conveniently located, walking distance from the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. There is a large, clean American style mall 2 blocks away (just ask where the Apple Store is) that has a humongous food court with an across-the-board selection from fast food to fine dining, both local and international selections. I wish we would have found it sooner!

Overall, I think I might have liked this hotel more if we hadn't just checked out of The Puli hotel in Shanghai, which is far superior to this hotel in every regard.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on a high floor to lessen street noise.
