We've always loved The Peninsula of Hongkong and Manila, thus it was a no-brainer when it came to choosing a hotel in Beijing where we decided to spend several days after attending a conference in Wuhan (including a side-trip to Jingzhou). Although the room was small, the hotel's location, amenities and friendly English-speaking staff more than made up for this 'deficiency'. The Lobby is a great place to wind down and people-watch where one could have lovely cocktails (and listen to live music) at the end of a long day of sightseeing, shopping etc. We found the buffet breakfast a bit steep but the Huang Ting Restaurant in the basement was a gourmet's discovery - a veritable oasis with the ambience of old Beijing and delicious, marvelous food (we thought that the roast duck was better than the one we had at Da Dong).
One sour note - when we left for the airport and were already several meters away from the hotel, the taxi driver (who spoke English) refused to put on the meter and told us that due to the traffic related to the Autumn festival he would take us to the airport for 300 RMB! We knew that the going rate was only 100-120 RMB so we insisted that he bring us back to the hotel so I could report him to the management. He refused and after several minutes of heated discussions, the driver finally hailed another cab (with a meter) and started taking out our luggage to the other cab.
The Hotel bellboys (3 of them had helped in putting the luggage in the trunk) should have taken the time to check that the taxi they hailed for us was a 'legal' one with a meter.
Finale: there were no traffic jams on the highway leading to the airport and we paid 100 RMB at journey's end. The driver would not accept the 20 RMB tip that was offered to him!
