“great location but small rooms”
Reviewed October 9, 2012

We've always loved The Peninsula of Hongkong and Manila, thus it was a no-brainer when it came to choosing a hotel in Beijing where we decided to spend several days after attending a conference in Wuhan (including a side-trip to Jingzhou). Although the room was small, the hotel's location, amenities and friendly English-speaking staff more than made up for this 'deficiency'. The Lobby is a great place to wind down and people-watch where one could have lovely cocktails (and listen to live music) at the end of a long day of sightseeing, shopping etc. We found the buffet breakfast a bit steep but the Huang Ting Restaurant in the basement was a gourmet's discovery - a veritable oasis with the ambience of old Beijing and delicious, marvelous food (we thought that the roast duck was better than the one we had at Da Dong).
One sour note - when we left for the airport and were already several meters away from the hotel, the taxi driver (who spoke English) refused to put on the meter and told us that due to the traffic related to the Autumn festival he would take us to the airport for 300 RMB! We knew that the going rate was only 100-120 RMB so we insisted that he bring us back to the hotel so I could report him to the management. He refused and after several minutes of heated discussions, the driver finally hailed another cab (with a meter) and started taking out our luggage to the other cab.

The Hotel bellboys (3 of them had helped in putting the luggage in the trunk) should have taken the time to check that the taxi they hailed for us was a 'legal' one with a meter.

Finale: there were no traffic jams on the highway leading to the airport and we paid 100 RMB at journey's end. The driver would not accept the 20 RMB tip that was offered to him!

Room Tip: Higher floors are less noisy and the room we got did not have a view of the other tall buildings.

The staff was very accommodating, from early check-in to late check out! The staff in the fitness room and pool were wonderful and both facilities were great. Rooms were great. Location can't be beat. I used the running map from the hotel, too. Really great way to explore Beijing in the early morning! Great restaurants nearby. The only reason I did not give this review 5 stars was that breakfast was VERY expensive (which I expected), but that my 6 year old was charged for a full breakfast, was bit surprising(especially since she only has a bowl of cereal!).

I've stayed a couple of time at this hotel, once with my wife on holiday and once on business. Overall it's a very very good international hotel: the staff are helpful with good English, the location is ideal for exploring central Beijing and the spa is absolutely excellent. The breakfast is excellent and I'd also recommend the Chinese restaurant here too.
What bring is down a little is that the rooms aren't the best, feeling a little old and small, falling a bit below what I'd consider global Peninsular standard. I believe that this was another hotel before and it was re-purposed for the Peninsula, and unfortunately it shows. I probably would stay again though.

Very fine service: helpful and knowledgeable concierge. Good buffet breakfast and good buffet dinner. Beds exceptionally comfortable. Quiet. Well located. Hotel made many evening reservations for us - their suggestions of restaurants and the fine night show were really good.

Room Tip: Trade of not much view or city view but street noise. We went for no view as we were rarely in room...

We spent two nights in the Peninsula Beijing on an extended land tour while doing the World Voyage on the Queen Mary 2. We had never been to China before and reservations as to quality of accommodations and western standards. Well duh, Beijing is one of the most modern and up to date places I have ever visited. This huge hotel met and exceeded our needs in every way. Our room was a standard double, that was large and luxurious. Check-in and Check-out were handled seamlessly by the QM2 tour staff. All of our meals were prearranged buffets in the lower level buffet. Without a doubt this was the best buffet I had ever seen. Every imaginable food was offered, covering both Western and Chinese items. Much of the food was prepared fresh. The buffet could not have been better. The location of the hotel is central. We had little time on our own because of the extended tours, but in the late evening we walked around the very stylish neighborhood in complete confidence of our safety. Just a few moments away by foot is the very famous "Food Street" where an amazing array of late night snacks are available -- none of which I would have eaten! But never the less it was on the highlights of the trip.

Also the two Rolls Royce courtesy cars parked in front were quite a spectacle. This hotel clearly falls into my category of world class. Have fun here.

We moved to The Peninsula after a horrible check in experience at the Crowne Plaza Beijing Wangfujing and were totally happy with our choice during the whole stay!

Check in went really smooth. There were doormen dressed in white who opened the door for us greeting us and smiling. Immediately, someone approached us to take care of our luggage. Reception was very friendly and efficient. Room was superb! With all the small details that make the difference! We were three and when they delivered the extra bed, they also brought extra mineral water, extra pair of slippers, a third bathrobe and extra towels and toiletry without us having to ask for it! Bathrooms are outstanding. Spa and pool are top of the notch! And prices are reasonable for what you get and for the central location!!!

The only thing I would critisize is the fact that the lobby area is integrated in the shopping arcade. Its really inpersonal and cold and you rather feel like sitting in a shopping mall surrounded by expensive but empty shops than in a deluxe hotel. So otally different from Peninsula HK,Shanghai or NY.

The Peninsula despite being a rather old hotel (as you can tell by the building itself and the layout of the rooms), still is a outstanding hotel in Beijing. The interior is obviously refurbished and in a very good condition and the service is just great and very attentive with everyone greeting and smiling at you from the maid to the concierge!

Finally when we checked out and were waiting for a cab tto take us to the airport the doormen waited with us and tried to have a little ncie chat with us... I guess that is the Peninsula polish which you won't get in any other hotel in Beijing. I will definitely return!

At a first glance, when you enter the hall, you may get that feeling of staying at a 4 or 5 stars hotel, but giving a better look around and then getting to the rooms you realize that - hall apart - the hotel is long way distance from the twin ones around the world. Not for the price though. The hotel needs a refreshment and needs to lower the prices until then! All the international firms' boutiques are located in the hotel, which donates that fashion-cool atmosphere (although I don't get the sense of buying firm stuff... in China, the "Country of Copycats"!). The room (we had a good one with the window facing Wangfujing road) was fairly spacious and well equipped, although it looked too old and definitively needs to be renovated soon. The a/c pad wasn't fully working, so it was impossible to regulate the inside temperature.
The bathroom was fine, although we had SERIOUS troubles with... the flushing. We had to call the maintenance, which sorted out the problem. Overall it took total 20 minutes time.
The breakfast is the best part of it! It is served at the Restaurant at floor -1. Honestly this is excellent, but beware: DO NOT GO FOR LUNCH OR DINNER UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO SPEND more than 90USD for a burger, a beer, a bottle of water and some noodles.
On a last note, I have been asked for a bigger tip by the luggage boys!!!
Remember to ask for the concierge to write you down in Chinese the address of any place you want to visit: it's for the taxi drivers; none of them speaks a word of English.
