“Grand Hotel is acutally quite grand but....”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 18, 2012

We stayed at the Grand Hotel in June 2012 while on business in China. The hotel facilities and pricing is clearly designed for business guests and conferences.

Level of English:
Reception OK, Resturants - Communicating was a Struggle, Other Staff - None

1. The rooms and the hotel are very nice (not 5* as claimed but definitely upper end)
2. The food and drinks are very expensive - breakfast was around $30 AUD which was insane for some Cornflakes and an OJ. Also the resturants were very expensive for dinner and lunch.
3. The views over the forbidden city were ok but in the end it was just some trees and red roofs.
4. Turn left out the front door to go shopping (500m) very good, turn right for Tianamen Sq and Forbidden City (500 -700m)
5. Finally - the hotel gave me food poisoning. I had not eaten all day as we were flying in, the only food I had was from the hotel kitchen. When I complained; there was no apology in fact they seemed to be quite angry with me. So I packed up and left.

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a Palace / Forbidden City View Room, otherwise stay somewhere else

If you want an affordable place to stay that's close to the two major tourist attractions in Beijing, then this is the hotel for you.

On a recent trip to Beijing we stayed in a "City View" room that apparently had views of the Forbidden City. Unfortunately, due to Beijing's smog, we rarely saw the famous City however we were a leisurely 400m from the entrance and from Tianamen Square. It was also conveniently close to the Wangfujing retail strip, Snack Street (with all the scorpions, seahorses and starfish that you can eat!) and the subway. There was also a number of leafy streets to wander through and get deliberately lost in.

The room was neat, a good size and with a nice bathroom. We didn't eat in the restaurants but there was certainly a good selection of cuisines.

However, the highlight was the concierge staff. They bent over backwards for us - even when we had checked out but returned to collect our luggage. We were sweaty and tired but they offered the use of the gym to have a shower before a long train ride to Xi'an (which they also organised).

As written in other reviews, our room was ok and the whole hotel wreaked of cigarette smoke as people were able to light up pretty much wherever they liked. So if you don't mind that then it's probably acceptable. Tours and airport transfers are overpriced - you're better off getting the metro or a taxi to/from the airport and booking a tour with an outside company. We didn't eat at the hotel as Wangfujing Road is only 5 mins walk and has plenty of choices.

Metro is close and buses 60 & 82 on the side road can take you to the Hutong for Y1 each way.

We would look at alternatives before staying here again.

We stayed for a week at Grand Hotel Beijing and found it to be disappointing overall. The hotel is outdated, the rooms smell heavily of smoke and the breakfast is terrible for a 5 star hotel. The airconditioning was ineffective so the room was always too hot. On the plus points however, we has a very special view of Tiananmen and the Forbidden City from our 8th floor room and the traditional Chinese furniture in the room was beautiful.

The hotel's proximity to Tiananmen, the Forbidden city and the Wangfujing area it great, however its location on Changan Road (the major 10 lane road through Beijing) makes it difficult to get a taxi. There are much better value hotels in the Wangfujing area!

I stayed just one night at the Grand Hotel Beijing but I must admit that there are some better 4* hotels in Beijing than this 5* one. There was nothing but, but something was missing. It's a very good, professional hotel with a view of a Forbidden City but probably you might choose something better. Nice sauna and a small swimming pool. Probably won't choose it again.

Room Tip: View of a Forbidden City is cool.

Easy to find if you give the taxi driver a map and the address in chinese do your preparation before go I did not find any taxi driver that spoke English while I was in Beijing. This hotel is 5 minutes walk from Tianamen Square I chose this hotel for this reason(to see the flag raising ceremony as it would be an early start).Check in was easy staff spoke very good English.

The best thing about this hotel is it's location in Beijing. The layout is a bit strange, the lobby is super small, the court yard is super big, and the room size is average. As a western visitor, I found it to be like most China hotels, outdated, limited breakfast choices, hard beds, and friendly staff. This hotel is connected to other business and hotels with an interior walkway, which makes it nice when you visit in the winter. The wifi was free but limited to the inner courtyard and the swimming pool was on the small side, but it was indoors. This hotel needs to be updated and painted. (Don't worry about smoking vs. non-smoking, you smell smoke everywhere you go.)
