We, family of four including two teenage sons, stayed here for five nights in late June 2011. First stop on our China tour. Hotels is super location - for some of main sites, and less than a 5 min walk to the metro which we used - though you do tend to use a lot of taxis which are very cheap - few dollars normally if you're not going far.
Rooms were in older part of building - so not fantastic and a bit old fashioned but they were reasonably spacious and had all the facilities you require. Breakfasts on the other hand were superb and probably best we had in China - great range of hot/cold food - so great to fill up on and no need for much lunch. We ate in local restaurants which were fine and good value - most had good pictures on menu or had short english subtitles, enough to explain what you were getting.
Five days is probably necessary if you want to have a pretty comprehensive visit to Beijing (my wife and I had been here on honeymoon 21 year before in 1990 - boy have things changed) . Traffic is a nightmare - and be v careful when crossing the road.
Staff in hotel v friendly/helpful - make sure you get card for hotel on arrival so you can show to taxi driver.
We did have some drinks in reception/lounge and yes they are expensive at c $4 per soft drink. But developed China is not cheap.
We would certainly stay here again, though perhaps argue for a more modern room.

Room Tip: perhaps ask to see you room on arrival to make sure you're happy with it

Having stayed at their other properties around asia, I must say that my stay here this time around was somewhat disappointing and impersonal on the part of the hotel staff. My family were given wrong rooms to begin with, despite having checked in properly. Imagine having to load everything into the suitcases again after having unpacked the same. The persistent calls made to effect the room switch despite having my kids still asleep due to jetlag. Mind you, I had actually reserved a family room, but ended up being given 2 adjoining singles.

This outlet in Beijing ought to just make a trip to their other outlets, say in Tanjong Benoa or Bangkok and make a simple comparison as to what's lacking...

We stayed for 8 nights and upgraded to the executive room which included buffet breakfast and evening cocktails. Check in was on the 19th floor which has a dedicated reception and was quick and efficient. At the buffet breakfast there was a large choice of hot and cold food. The evening cocktails offer was actually a choice of wine, spirits, bottled beers as well as soft drinks and snacks. The lounge had views towards the Forbidden City. The staff on the executive floor were very helpful and pleasant and made our stay all the more enjoyable. The hotel itself is well situated close to the main shopping area and also restaurants. We would recommend the hotel's french restaurant if you tire of the lovely local food. We had such a great time in Beijing we can't wait to return and will stay at the Novotel again.

Room Tip: upgrade to the executive room for value for money buffet breakfast & evening cocktails

Stayed 4 nights at this hotel, at the end of our Diamond Princess Cruise from Singapore to Beijing . The facility and location was sound and of good standard, but all the positive comments are swallowed by the excessive room temperature. Throughout the stay the outside temp was a pleasant 14-18, but the room at no time was less than 30, 24 hours a day. The air conditioning made no difference, it was a sweat box!.

Repeated discussion with the Hotel management, finally resulted in an admission that the flue from the 24 hours restaurant were being discharged straight up into the hotel, creating the enormous heat. Management after early denials, finally were more open, but said there was nothing they could do. Management finally offered us a change of room on the 3rd day, but on the same side of the hotel, and our inspection of this alternative 14th floor room, showed the same temperature issue. We stayed put, in my case staying out of the room till nearly midnight, and up at 6am, desperate to find cooler areas, which generally was the case in the Hotels public area

It really took the pleasure out of our stay, the hotel in all other regard was very pleasant, but we will never return

We stayed in the Novotel Peace Hotel at the end of July at the start of our family holiday in China which took us from Beijing down through Xian, Chengdu and Guilin. The hotel is nice - its modern, well kept, friendly staff and it really does have a great location - there is a modern market and a food night market just down the road and the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square is about 1km away.

There main reason for down grading my rating to just average is the price. Now Beijing is expensive but we found the prices in the lounge even for a cup of coffee were very expensive. Other than that the hotel is a good place to stay and we did enjoy ourselves because it is a really good base to see Beijing.

We really did love China and so decided to write down our experiences on the web. You can read about all our experiences in China at http://www.my-family-travel-to-china.com
