“One of my favourites in Beijing.”

Conveniently located - walking radius to all must visit spots is short, and location for the famous novel 'Memoirs of the city south'. There is an underground station right in front of the hotel! The Tang Palace (not hotel establishment but situates conveniently inside the hotel) serves authentic Cantonese cuisine (a twist to the Hong Kong style but suits locals) - my favourite lunch yum-cha place. The Executive floor is definitely value for money.

This is a great hotel, located in the heart of Beijing with a subway station right outside the mail entrance and within walking distance to Tiananmen square (15 min) and Hong Qiao Pearl market (20 min) as well as major shopping areas such as Wangfujing. You can also easily reach the Hou hai area (five stations on the metro) with it's funky nightlife, full of small bars, restaurants and pubs. Nice, tidy rooms and capable, attentive staff make this hotel a gem. Splendid!

It's near the Beijing railway station (about 15 min walk), next to the Chongwenmen metro station, and near many malls and restaurants. We even had Peking duck in the restaurant - they told us that the chef was from the famous Qianjude restaurant. Yum!
Overall a pleasant stay, even though we booked the windowless room. It can be a bit stuffy, though.

Room Tip: The windowless room can be stuffy - but adequate enough for those who wants an affordable but good h...

Everything in this hotel is average. Nothing stands out as particularly good. We were put up in this hotel as part of our Beijing tour. I should have used my better judgement and stayed at the Hyatt or Intercontinental or Crowne Plaza. Two experiences stood out as particularly bad.

Breakfast Buffet: Generally, the food was good and edible. But the service was terrible. Waiters were running around and were preoccupied with I don't know what. Customers were run over as they rushed left and right throughout to meal. The automatic coffee machines were constantly not working and even the army of confused waiters didn't manage to fix the problem.

Check-out: I travel a LOT on business and a few times a year on vacation. I have never in my life eaten anything from the min bar because of the ridiculous prices that typically get charged. So, when we checked out, the front desk insisted that we had taken a Dove chocolate bar. When I told them that me did not take any chocolate, they accused my two very young children. I then explained that my kids are trained not to touch the mini bar with threats of severe punishment. This is driven by to fact that they have severe nut allergies and eating chocolate with nuts can kill them. I even went as far as to show them our Chinese language allergy cards. But as always in China, I was talking to wall. I ended up having to pay for the chocolate bar. It was about RMB20, or $3.50. Not the end of the world financially, but in this case, it's the principle that counts. I hope the RMB20 will last you a long time, because I won't ever stay at any of your hotels again.

Room Tip: Go to another hotel.

Very impressed with the service standard of the bell boys and concierge. The concierge helped us many times to call our tour guide, make reservations, call for taxis, and even gave excellent advise where to eat peking duck. The bell boy even advised us to take the subway instead of the taxi because he predicted that the roads would be jammed and we might run late for our program.

The rooms are standard of any Novotel hotel and the international breakfast selection was very satisfactory. This hotel is near Wangfujing, taxi ride of RMB10. I chose to stay here instead of the Novotel Peace because Novotel Xin Qiao is at the doorstep of the Subway station (Chongwenmen Station). To take the subway anywhere in Beijing is a flat rate of RMB2. Novotel Xin Qiao is also walking distance from Glory Mall and other malls with supermarkets and restaurants, it is also walking distance from Tiananmen Square and the Beijing Urban Planning Exhibition Museum (about a leisurely 20 min walk). I would come back and stay again in the future.

Room Tip: The rooms on level 7 directly face the tennis court.

While I was preparing for my family vacation to China, the only thing that sounded familiar to me was the name Novotel and that made me easier for me to decide to book ourselves at Novotel Xinqiao, Bjng.

The staff is very courteous and speaks decent English which is a rarity in China and that itself would make you feel at ease in this totally new environs. The location of the hotel is great, very close to all the important landmarks in Bjng including Tienanmen Sq, Temples of Heaven, Wangfujing St, etc and the best part is that the Chongwenmen subway station has one exit right in front of the hotel. The rooms are clean and spacious with all the basic comfort and luxury you would expect from a hotel like this. You should always opt for the complimentary breakfast as that is most likely to be your safest and most filling meal of the day especially if you are particular about what you eat and also plan to be on the move during the day. You will at least find one person in the staff who can explain what all goes into each dish which will not be the case once you step out of the hotel.

Please donot depend on the business centre for any important last minute work as everything from changing the interface to English and getting a decent internet speed is a big gamble. The counters can get a bit crowded at check-out time and it is better to have an early or a late check out depending on your urgency to leave the place. Overall the place set the tone for a very memorable stay in Beijing for me and my family, quite contrary to all those scary stories floating around in this regard.

A Lonely planet comes in handy as it prepares for all the potential dangers in the city and it was only because of them that I didn't fall prey to repeated attempts from unnaturally friendly locals at Wangfujing St trying to strike up a conversation. These are typically students who would invite you to an expensive restaurant for some coffee/beer and finally leave you in the lurch forcing you to foot some exorbitant bills. Just a word of advice though this has nothing to do with the hotel review:-)

As they say in China, Xie Xie; Thank you;-)
