We live in Beijing and have celebrated a number of special occasions such as birthdays and farewells, at some of the best restaurants in town. In my opinion, Temple Restaurant Beijing ranks right up there.
TRB, which resides in a converted Chinese temple, is modernity meets centuries of tradition. It is set in a quiet hutong neighborhood with a modern interior juxtaposed against the well-preserved temple exterior. The restaurant itself is intimate and perfect for romantic meals.
Service is impeccable - a doorman welcomes you at the entrance of the courtyard leading into the restaurant, the maitre 'd and bilingual waitstaff are personable and always on hand to refill your drinks and take your orders etc.
We opted for the 4-course tasting menu (398 RMB +15% service charge), which was excellent. A degustation menu for 980 RMB is also available. The wine list is extensive and features wines from all the key wine regions around the world. We were served a selection of complimentary amuse bouche and fresh bread before the meal, and a series of petit fours following our dessert course. Because we were celebrating our first year anniversary, we also enjoyed a fruit tart made with seasonal fruits, compliments of the chef.
TRB also features an excellent bar that serves some of Beijiing's best cocktails. While there are a couple of mainstays on the drinks menu, seasonal cocktails are introduced every couple of months. Cocktails can be ordered in the bar or at the restaurant.
As we left the restaurant, we were presented with a little gift - a small pot of homemade fruit jam, which made our day. Fine dining has become very popular in the capital but it is the little touches like these that sets apart a great restaurant from the others, and creates a memorable experience for its guests.
