“An exelent choice to visit Beijing”
Reviewed May 11, 2013 via mobile

It's difficult to find once is inside a Hutong. However the location is great if you want to visit Beijing. You have a metro station nearby with good connections everywhere in the city. An exelent value for money option. The staff is great and very helpful. You need to pay in cash so don't forget to cash some money before. Nevertheless there's a bankomat nearby. It's a bit noisy during the night specially if there are guest arriving late night.

PROS
- Beautiful courtyard
- Western toilet in the rooms
- Laundry per kilo (give them a bag and they'll give it back to you clean!)
- Good choice of excursions (no tourist trap)
- Helpful, English-speaking staff
- 5mins away from DongSi station: amazing location. Main street full of life, shops and restaurants.
- Two funny pekinese dogs: Obama (black) and Wen Jiabao (white) :-)
- Real hutong experience
- KungFu lessons: if you don't want to join in, they're always nice and interesting to watch!
- Common PC with VPN internet connection
- Reasonably clean (although not 100% spotless)

CONS
- At the end of a little hutong: hard to find, several taxis wouldn't take us there. It's better to ask them to leave you at the main street and walk
- Common area is small and not very inviting compared to other hostels
- Hostel is very expensive compared to general hostel price in China
- Payment only possible in cash: I missed another possibilities (if not credit card, at least paypal!)
- The bathroom would flood everytime we showered, no matter how careful we were!
- Breakfast is very limited (eggs, sausage...) although they'd take out some extras (tomato, bananas, toast).
- Coffee at 20 yuan? Seriously?
- A LOT of staff around made it hard to know who worked there, who didn't, who you should talk to...

All in all, a beautiful courtyard hostel in a great location that let's you experience the real life of a hutong, while not compromising all basic comforts (esp. bathroom-wise). Although it's a bit overpriced, I think it's a great choice for a first contact with the chinese reality.

Room Tip: We had a double bed w/ pvt bathroom at 600 RMB per night (!). Ground level, window just across the y...

We spent 3 days in Fly by Knight and wouldn't regret our decision. Yes, the atmosphere and architecture are indeed great and gives you an authentic feeling of how China is/ used to be. Most hostels definitely have less flair and are less unique. The rooms were big and the bed absolutely comfortable.

Besides, the staff was very mixed (there was one girl who always gave me the feeling I was bothering her when asking a question by almost rolling her eyes. Other were absolutely lovely and helpful, e.g. Yasmin). The bathroom was not integrated in our room so we had to pass the whole yard, which is especially at night a bit disturbing. There was no privacy in the bathroom either.
Also this whole "sustainable" thing they try to promote their hostel with seems to be a bit fake...all they do is writing little signs over the tabs "save water, save our earth" (and probably their next water bill), the breakfast is very meaty and for vegetarians there is just bad bread and even worse jam (or chinese egg...).

All in all, it's a lovely place but too pricy. There are similar hostels (also old courtyards) that are way less expensive and have their own bathroom in Beijing! And on the other hand there are already good hotels in China (not comparable to european prices) at the same price level of this hostel. We paid about 50 Euros per night/ 2 persons, I would at least expect a private bathroom for this.

Firstly, don't be put off by the alley-like hutongs of Beijing where FBK is located. They may seem sketchy and confusing at first, but you're privy to some real Beijing day-to-day lives that you wouldn't observe otherwise. It really heightens the experience, as far as I was concerned.

The hostel itself is a traditional-style building, built around two courtyards with pavilions all the way around (accessible only by a provided proxy card when you check-in). The whole setup was really homey-feeling, especially when you throw in the two resident dogs, Obama and Wanjaba. Take note, these two are some tough nuts to crack but total sweethearts once you do.

We were nine people staying at this hostel over this past Chinese New Year. We overtook the largest dorm (8-person, but Daniel provided us with a ninth bed so we could all stay together) the room was super clean and had the most comfortable beds I'd slept in on my entire trip. Annnd.... We were provided a courtesy cellphone, a unique perk, in all the hostels I've stayed at, but one that was much appreciated. Extra awesome bonus; Daniel hosts a weekly Kung-Fu class, which I strongly recommend you do if you have the opportunity.

The hostel also provided a hearty and hot breakfast, which was perfect for keeping away the Beijing chill. You could also purchase coffee, drinks and snacks in the common room. One of the really cool things I found about this hostel is that it runs on the honour system- there was always a wad of cash on the desk for paying snack dues and making change.

The other staff are all smiles and absolute dolls, wonderful girls and so genuinely kind and enthusiastic. They took us to a New Year festival and showed us how the Beijing bus system works (and introduced me to red date yoghurt... man, that stuff is delicious).

For New Year's Eve, the hostel put out a massive spread of food, wine and CNY cakes-- it was quite the party and probably one of the highlights of our time in Beijing.

Seriously, don't look for another hostel-- this is the one you should stay at.

Was great, I met people all around the world and also Chinese helpful people who helped me understand their culture, beds are neat, but restroom smell is horrible. Reception girl was very helpful trying to book great wall tour and answering me questions about places to go, food to eat. And we had small party last night at the hostal and they didn't complain about it and helped to ask for pizza. Thank you guys for such a great time in Beijing. I highly recommend this hostal.

Room Tip: Try room next to reception to have wifi access in your room

This is a fine hostel to stay in while in Beijing. The staff are very friendly and it feels like a safe place. The location is really interesting - it is in a traditional Beijing "hutong". Taxis only want to drop you at the hutong entrance so make sure you print off the directions. Once you find it the first time it is easy after that.

Its a bit difficult for us to find Flyby knight, finally we reached there, from Dongcheng station to hostel with directions we had taken printout already. It doesn't looks like a hostel, it was like a temple. Everyone works there knew english better.
Rooms are very clean and neat. They ve dining area in reception, also they ve morning breakfast.
They were very helpful in providing details about all info we needed( to go to great wall of china , forbidden city and to reach airport).
This hostel is simply superb, can't rate anything other than 5(Excellent).
