“An excellent place to stay”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

One of my favourite hostels around the world. A little on the pricey side for real budget travel but set in a lovely old Chinese hutong courtyard with very friendly and helpful staff, very conveniently located for the DongSi Metro station. Very clean and a western toilet even though in the hutong. This was the second time I stayed here and if I return to Beijing again I'll certainly look to book in here. Bacon and eggs breakfast too! Very little for me to dislike, the only thing really being no wi-fi access in my dorm. I would also say that there are often two puppies in the courtyard (not on the hostel description) so if you don't like / are allergic to dogs then it may not be for you.

We are a couple in our 70s. we do not want to stay in a shinning marble floor foyer hotel. we wanted to live like a local in a courtyard hotel preferably in its original design. We were not disappointed. Peace and tranquillity would describe our 3 nights stay. Tina and the staff were most helpful in every aspect, even providing us with a mobile phone, in case we get lost in Beijing. Tina pointed us to all the local eateries, each night we ate a hearty meal at prices costing no more than 2 Haagen Dazs ice cream. If you want to experience the hutong way of life, the serenity and harmony that is lost in a large hotel complex, stay at the FBK courtyard Inn. You will not regret it. It is a bit difficult to locate as it is in a dead end street, but ask and the locals will direct you. Tina emailed us the address in Chinese which we showed the taxi driver who drove us there.

Room Tip: select the ensuite room

This was probably the best budget accommodation I have ever stayed in. My friend and I stayed in one of their double rooms. Ours did not have a private (ensuite) bathroom. My only complaint is that it was inconvenient to have to walk across two courtyards to get to the shared bathroom, but this, too, is part of the hutong experience, since traditional hutongs did not have any bathrooms but shared a latrine in the alleyway with other residents. (These are still in use, including one right outside Fly By Knight.) Everything else about this place is wonderful. The old Beijing hutong setting is extremely atmospheric, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful and speak good English. They will do your laundry for a fee and helped me book accommodations for later in my trip. The English-style breakfast is tasty and includes some of the best coffee I've tasted, in a country not known for its coffee. The location is wonderful, a bit hard to find when you first arrive, but a short walk from the metro/subway in a traditional Beijing hutong neighborhood full of character and not yet airbrushed for tourists. Just steps away are wonderful little neighborhood restaurants serving tasty Chinese breakfasts (if you want to try them), and Beijing classics such as chuar (barbecued skewers of meat or vegetables). While this hostel is a little more expensive than some others in Beijing, it is a terrific bargain, because the quality and the pleasure of the experience is so much greater.

Room Tip: I can't comment on the dorms, as I didn't stay in one, but the private rooms are really deli...

Wonderful experience, not only excellent accommodations in the double ensuite room in this traditional courtyard house but very friendly and helpful staff. FbyK is also listed as a hostel with dorm-style rooms which meant that you get to meet many people from all over the world and share experiences. The public room and courtyard are excellent meeting places. FbyK also offers daily cultural events that guests can participate in. English-style breakfast is included and beverages are available at very reduced price. Traditional restaurants are on the doorstep in the hutong, good shopping and subway within a short walk. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: If you're wanting more privacy, there are at least 3 double/king rooms with ensuite bathrooms. A...

I stayed here with my mother, and had a great experience at the hotel. The people who work and travel here are very friendly and helpful, breakfast was great, and the rooms were comfortable and clean. It was a little difficult to find, as it is down an alley in a hutong, so be sure to print out the map on their website. The benefit to that though, is that even though you are in the middle of a huge busy city, at night it is completely silent. There were morning kung fu lessons that were nice to watch (we didn't take them though). Once we got our bearings, it was easy to walk to the subway stop, and we also walked to Dadong for Peking duck one night. Free wifi was great. Overall, this was a great place to stay, and I would recommend it to anyone exploring Beijing.

We absolutely enjoyed our stay in this hostel for 2 days in Aug 2012. The staffs were courteous and friendly. Also, this place is good to meet other travellers and share the experiences. Around 8 of us stayed in this hotel and we got a 8-bed dorm near the reception area.
The dorms were clean and spacious. The bathroom was spacious and the water pressure was good. The architecture of the hostel resembles an ancient temple (in China) and we loved that.

It was somewhat difficult to find the hostel. Just get down at the Dong Si station and navigate using a map. The hostel is around 10-15 mins walk from the station. There is a public toilet in front of the hostel and it was kind of annoying but once you are inside the hostel the ambience is outstanding.

All the staffs spoke excellent English (esp Daniel) and they were very helpful.
They have food and the beverages section in the reception. All the rates are mentioned and you can take whatever you want and just keep the money in the desk!

The wi-fi had a very good connectivity and they have a common PC (wired internet) in the reception.

They also arrange day trips to the Great Wall of China (Multianyu, Badaling views).
The rates were nominal and

Overall we enjoyed our stay here and will definitely come back.

Highly recommeded.

Thank you girls so much for your service. Although I only stayed there for 3 nights, I feel like at home! Especially the familiar Taiwanese 人情味 :) Thank you for answering all my questions patiently. It is also the best place to meet great travel mates. It's a shame that I didn't have chance to talk to Daniel, the boss. I'll definitely stay here again next time I visit Beijing.
