“Amazing place, great staff, perfect location!”
Reviewed October 29, 2011

At the end of a one month trip in China, Beijing was our last stop. We'd slept all over the country and I can honestly say this was the BEST place we stayed in China. The owner Daniel and Tina the manager both speak perfect English and are wonderful. We were greeted upon our arrival at midnight by Daniel, who offered tea and pastries. We were so welcomed, and this only continued over our 4-day stay there. We shared a lunch with them on one day and were given tips about where to go in the area and also insight into Hutong life (the neighbourhood of narrow lanes where Fly By Knight is located).

The hostel (more of a B&B really) is beautiful, with wooden floors in the new rooms, great comfortable beds - all in a simple modern meets traditional style. The layout of the place is a traditional Chinese style of a central courtyard with the rooms surrounding it. There is a common room where breakfast is served on a large wooden table and there is also a sofa and computer to lounge and connect. Tea, coffee and various soft drinks are available at all times, as is filtered water (complimentary). Breakfast is a nice Western style with eggs, toast, bacon, etc. Worth pointing out that power and hot water were always available - which sounds obvious, but this is not the case in all hotels in China.

The location is great - close to the metro and within walking distance to the Forbidden City. The hutongs themselves are one of the last bastions of Old Beijing - with low rise houses and small local sellers living and working together in a sort of out of time community - with the modern city life surrounding it but seemingly separate from this quaint village-like area. The only tip is if taking a taxi from metro or airport - bring a detailed map (in Chinese) and or give Daniel a call to speak to the driver to explain where they are, they are in a quiet alleyway so it's not a major road - tho is central.

Great place, sad to leave - will always call Fly By Knight home when in Beijing.

I took my husband to Beijing to visit my motherland so I wanted to make sure he had the best experience ever. After weeks of looking for a place to stay I found Fly by Knight Courtyard. I feel very fortunate that we got to stay here for a week during our visit because I have taken people to Beijing before and have never had such a perfect experience. These are just some of the reasons why there isn't a better place to stay in Beijing:

- Daniel has traveled extensive and knows exactly what our needs are: authentic Se He Yuan experience with the comforts of western accommodations and you will not find a cleaner place in Beijing to stay, this includes most 3/4 star hotels.

- Daniel and his team are warm, friendly and helpful. This may seem normal but if you've been to beijing you will know that's not the case in most places. People aren't helpful and mostly don't speak english and definitely usually don't care to help you. So staying here is a stark contrast. They help us with all our questions and they are like a family themselves and treat the guests that way too - sharing food, stories and space.

- The guests are all nice and respectful travelers like us, we felt really safe all the time almost never need to lock our doors.

We could keep going but it's best to experience this yourself. Needless to say we'd return next time we're in Beijing and feel we'll be coming back to see friends.
