Our guide took us here on the way to the Great Wall. Played up the "museum" part of it. It's a store not a museum and I'm sure there is some kick back for bringing us there. That being said they have some very nice jade pieces that come with a certificate of authenticity. The prices aren't the cheapest but you get what you pay for. Keep in mind that there is some room to bargain down on the price.

We stopped at the Run-Ze Jade Gardens as part of tour on way to Great Wall. We trusted that we were getting a quality product. Interestingly when we returned to humid Brisbane the red/brown Jade Picu we purchased is now leaking brown dye! Paying the exorbitant prices did not give us a good product.

The WORST meal we ate in China, period. We visited the Badaling section of the GW and were informed that we would be having lunch at the "Jade Factory". We kinda knew what this was about, but didn't protest. Our bad, don't make the same mistake.

We were seated and tepid food of poor USA stripmall quality was placed in front of us. The dregs of two 600ml beer bottles were poured into our glasses, warm and flat (see pic). I moved to get an unopened bottle only to have a "server" rush in and explain that only the first glass is free. These 600ml bottles are available in every store for $0.94 USD. The "food" was cheap veggies and tough chicken, clearly coated in a bland "starch sauce".

Our sentence was 2 hours, 1 for lunch and 1 for shopping, in which we browsed and were followed around by sales people who were comically like cartoon sharks, always right there trying to steer us from the mult-thousand dollar and actually impressive jade carvings, to small, cheap trinkets.

We ended up spending so much time we told our guide to skip the Ming Tombs (a Chinese flight attendant said they were, "a hole in the ground"), and just drop us off at the Drum Tower and Bell Tower (suggested by same attendant) where we were able to see the last drum performance of the day. It was phenomenal!

Good lunch upstairs. Great restrooms! Jade showroom was typical place for selling their product. Nice jade pieces but overpriced, except you knew you were getting good jade.can haggle. Once you buy their attitude changed a bit and they weren't as friendly. Overall experience was fine. I did buy some pieces. Went with a tour.

Any sort of tour in beijing will take you to various "factory" visits. Naturally, this ends with a walk through an extensive gift shop with numerous people willing to help you part with your money. Some of these visits are better than others. The Run-ze jade garden is one of the nicer places. The information part of the visit was interesting. You can watch people actually working on intricate jade carvings. The products here run from the very affordable to the extremely expensive. The quality seems to be pretty good and the staff will haggle a bit, especially if you are buying an expensive piece, or several pieces. To top it off they have a pretty good restaurant upstairs. The lunch was very tasty. If you intend to buy jade in China, it is imperative that buy from a business you can trust is selling real jade. Every market has a plethora of green glass items that the merchant will swear up and down is jade. Real jade pieces are not 5 or 10 dollars. If you don't mind a cheap copy with a "jade look", then feel free to buy those pieces. However, if you wish to own real jade or jadeite, then this is a good palce to educate yourself and look.
