Many Beijingers lived in hutongs, but there are now very few left. Hutongs are community lanes - narrow, busy, and places where neighbours know each other, and quite lovely houses can be cheek by jowl with the neighbourhood recycling facility, where mountains of plastic and metal are hand sorted and carted off daily. I was very keen to stay in one having read Peter Heffer's wonderful essay from his book "Strange Stones". There are lots of neighbourhood restaurants offering hotpot, noodles and even duck at rock bottom prices. There will be very little English spoken in those restaurants, but with a few phrases, smiles and perhaps a dictionary you will be most welcome. Three blond women were novelties, and other guests often smiled and said hello.
The hotel is a modern small building in the middle of a busy lane. It is elegant, clean and comfortable, although rooms are very small if you are travelling with large bags. Breakfast lacks the variety of the larger Chinese hotels, but is more than adequate. Our only big beef was the highly erratic and very slow internet connection. It was very difficult to browse, let along make viber calls.
We were present for a shadow puppet show. The owners of the hotel are from Guilin where puppet making is based. The show is put on by a master and some of his students (enthusiastic school girls). We really enjoyed it. If you like the leather puppets, you can ask the master to make you one (fairly expensive, but will be a unique feature of your wall at home!)
