“Great property, just don't expect good tourist advice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 28, 2012

Absolutely no complaints about the property itself.

Fantastic soft beds, a rarity in China. Great breakfast included in the rate. Free computers to use the internet in the lobby. And a great location near a major transportation hub. All at a reasonable price. What more could you ask for?

Well... maybe good advice for tourists? Unfortunately that's my one beef with this hotel. I guess most tourists who stay in this kind of establishment go for "safe," expensive prepackaged tours, as opposed to more adventurous independent travellers. If you're the latter type, this may not be the place to get good advice.

I asked about getting to Mutianyu Great Wall by public bus, and they told me there's no public bus (not true). And then they told me that Badaling was better anyway. Boy am I glad I didn't listen! Yes there is a bus, and Mutianyu is awesome -most people wind up going to Badaling because it's a bit closer and convenient for package tours to take you there and to the Ming Tombs, but that also means it's going to be swamped with tourists. Mutianyu was fantastically restored, but without all the people. Walk a little bit, and you can even get shots of the wall with nobody in the picture. Anyway... great hotel, if you already know where you're going and don't expect any help.

Although it opened two years ago the hotel is still very new and clean. It has walking distances to metro station and sanlitun, the bar street, in Beijing. There are many restaurants nearby, Korean BBQ, peaking duck, Sichuan restaurant, and a hotpot which is very popular among the locals.

The hotel staff are very helpful. The breakfast has very good strong tasty coffee included. There are always pre made plain omelets, fried eggs, and hard boiled eggs; salads with a variety of lettuces, cherry tomatoes, purple cabbages, and sweet onions. There are two kinds of cheerios which I never tried. There are also stir fried noodles, rice, several kinds of vegetables, steamed buns with meat or chopped vegetable fills, wanton, porridge, deep fried doughs, and white bread to make toasts. Yorgurt, tangerines and pears are for breakfast too.

The room is with good size. The bed is comfortable and there are soft and hard pillows for you to choose. Th room is well lit. For us, it is an extra point that the window could be open a few inches as the room is just too hot an too dry. The bathroom is in good size though the space for the shower is a bit smaller than some of the other holiday inn express we stayed in China. We had a bit issues to control the hot water as sometimes the water can be too hot.

The wifi in the hotel is very good with strong signals. We don't recommend using the computers in the hotel lobby as the settings blocked too many non-Chinese sites, such as yahoo.com and gmail.

The hotel restaurant opens till 10pm with simple menus such as kongpao chicken, green vegetables, shrimp wanton, a few dim sum dishes, and simple club sandwiches. The restaurant staff don't really speak English but there is an English Chinese dictionary that they use to find whet exactly the guests want. It is nice to sit near the window to read or work on computers in the restaurant as it is always quiet after breakfast.

The only pitied we had is our room on the twelve floor facing the street. We heard people yelling and shouting in the early hours. The hotel didnt do anything to stop the noise. There are several taxi drivers hanging around the hotel. Once they saw non-Chinese guests walking out of the hotel, they swarmed and offered at least four-times of the price a normal taxi would cost. The door man standing next didn't make a comment.

Room Tip: Try to get a higher floor facing the garden not the street if you sleep light.

I am writing this while I am staying just now. Stuffs can speak well and are helps guests well though everybody are young. The impression is very clean and very modern. Floor stuffs are very friendly. Internet wifi is working well though "the Great Wall" seems to block to many sites: it was more moderate in last August when I stayed in Lido hotel. Everywhere within hotel I catch wifi with my mobile. There isn't a mini bar in a room and shower is a little too simple. However, shampoo bottles are put in shower room functionally. Surely many restaurants and store are near here. But the impression is just under bloc renovation. Mess is just for buffe style. So a lot space in supper time. From me, there isn't bad point. It is much more worthy than the price. In addition, no transportation service to airport but they will call taxi.

Very nice hotel, super clean, great modern rooms. The staff is very nice. The breakfast is very good, lots of option. Walking distance to the Beijing Yashow Market, grocery close by, and in front a very good Peking duck restaurant.

I arrived earlier than the usual check-in time. The staff at the reception was very friendly and accommodating. She told me I need to wait at most 30 minutes for my room to be ready. It was fine since I saw on the lobby that they have Mac Computers available for public use. I was about to turn my back but she told me, she just got the info from housekeeping that my room was ready. That was quick. She gave me my room key and the morning newspaper.

The lobby was spotlessly clean. Elevator functioned properly. The corridor was impressively well-lit and decorated. And my room was exactly as I expected.. exactly what was on the website. TV with foreign English channels worked. Airconditioner was quiet and warm. The window was wide and had an excellent view. The curtains were really sun-proof so it was dark when you close it to sleep. Toilet and bath had a smell of bleach but I was impressed with the lighting and fixtures. There's a choice of comfy pillows on the firm bed. Room lighting was well appointed.

Breakfast was included in the room rate. Western and Chinese food selection was ok. Restaurant staff greeted and smiled at me. They spoke and understood English. Restaurant windows were wide and had a considerable amount of morning sunshine.

A huge western supermarket called April Gourmet is just a minute away on foot. Sanlitun Village is 10 to 15 minutes away on foot or by cab. The bars at the Worker's Stadium is on the next block. Two subway stations are nearby - Dongsishitiao or Dongzhimen Station. Kenny Roger's and other western restaurants are in the vicinity. It's close to the embassy area and some shopping areas too.

Only thing negative was I could hear the baby crying from my next door neighbor's room at 5am. But I couldn't fault them on that.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for it's location, efficient and friendly-staff, cleanliness and good-value for money.

Room Tip: Get the room with morning sun.

If you are in Beijing as a tourist and looking for a convenient place with comfortable beds and a decent breakfast, choose this! Don't expect luxury.. there isn't any! The rooms are rather tiny, but if you are only getting back at 9 every night to shower and crash, choose this place!
If you are up at 6 and want to get going, breakfast starts at 6.30 am, so that's great too.
The best part is its extremely convenient location. And almost all taxi drivers know it so that's great!

Beijing is huge! so for me, location is the most important thing. the Holiday Inn Express Dongzhimen is very well located. walking distance from Sanlitun area, from Yashow Market (for shopping and bargaining experience) and always easy to get a cab from the street.
the front desk team was very helpful. I had a great help from one of the ladies in the front desk with a credit card issue, she did not give up untill the issue was solved, breakfast is free and good. and for one machine of laundry you pay 20RMB for a token.
I'll stay there again.
