Just had our first Beijing meal at Mr Shi's and the dumplings were delicious - even more so when washed down with the local beer.
This is casual & easy eating - not fine dining. Service was fine - I didn't speak any mandarin and she didn't speak English but the menu is in English so all good.
The location is great - just across the road from our hotel and in the cute hutong area which is definitely worth a visit.
Delicious dumplings at a very reasonable price. Just be ready for a room full of tourists - a dining spot for locals it didn't appear to be..

The dumplings are delicious with many combinations of fillings. Top off your meal with a chocolate and fruit filled fried dumpling. Caters to Westerners and Mr. Shi is right there to make your meal a memorable experience.

Mr shi's forever. The best dumplings I have ever eaten. Every flour. Every mode. And not only dumplings but much more.. little friendly restaurant. So nice and lovable. Good biers and personnel gentle. If you are in beijing, this place is a must.

Mr. Shi's dumplings is very famous, and in many ways it's very interesting, but ultimately it doesn't live up to the hype. He tries some interesting combinations for China (e.g., eggplant, tomato & basil), but I found they don't always mesh well with the traditional Chinese dipping sauces. I also thought the fried dumplings were a little too oily. That being said, the traditional steamed dumplings – and even a few of the unusual combinations – are perfectly delicious. There are certainly worse ways you could spend an afternoon, and the dessert dumplings are a fun way to end the meal. Where else can you find strawberry dumplings?

Mr. Shi has two restaurants in the Baochao Hutong (close to the Drumtower) almost opposite to each other, his dumplings are steamed or fried, made to order. You can also choose many other Chinese dishes from his menu. The place is famous for foreigners. The price is very reasonable.
