A wonderful boutique hotel ( i would rate it 31/2 stars in amenities and 5 stars in caring and service. Located in a hutong district, and built round a courtyard, The Orchid is a distinct pleasure to visit, because:
- they speak real English (which is very rare in China)
- they have a local media server with movies, available free of charge;
- they provide free internet connectivity;
- they serve a nice Western breakfast;
- they make real coffee (rare in China)
- they try to anticipate all your needs;
- they are just plain friendly and nice.
On the other hand, if you go to bed early, you might have a bit of a problem with courtyard noise.
I would not rate it high as a business hotel, but it is a distinct joy for the leisure traveler.

We had read all the 13 reviews before going, so we knew pretty much what to expect. However getting to know Joel, his partner and really helpful and warm friends made the beijing experience complete. I had written to Joel regarding pick up from the train station and he sent a really sweet taxi driver although he didn't speak any English, he managed to find us and got us to the hotel. We reach around 4 and see a bunch of guys (Joel and friends) chilling in the bar/reception. Joel promptly assists us with the check in and we can already feel the good vibes (not that I'm into all this but Joel and co seem to give out a lot of positive energy :) ) we see a notice saying the credit card machine is out of order cash or kind service only. Which was shocking considering I was pick-pocketed in shanghai lost all our money and cards, and my husband just has his cardsand reserve amount of cash. Joel's not at all worried about the money and tells us he'll figure something out.

He gave us really good suggestions for the evening including Ho Hai and dinner at Duck de Chine. Btw we met some really cool people at the bar at orchid, and at night Joel suggested we take their english speaking driver to the great wall, summer palace and forbidden city(to make the most of our 2 nights in Beijing) all of which he negotiated for us to 1500 yuan including tickets and lunch! Lilei their driver is 'special' as Joel put it, he entertained us with his music and singing and took us to a nice busy restaurant for lunch apart from waiting for us outside every place.

The breakfast at joels is great and it's nice to see him and friends up and shining in the morning after a night of partying/ baby sitting.

About the hotel, we stayed in courtyard facing ground floor room, it was in two levels with the living room and bathroom on the lower and the bedroom on the mezzanine..refurbished so well with furniture and decor that blended beautifully. Loved all the woodwork and the wooden bathroom floor..interesting!

When we checked out after breakfast on the 3rd day, Joel told us we could wire transfer the money into his account and he even put lelei our drivers money into this credit. Have never met such a trusting businessman, but then again The Orchid and all the people there are special. Always eager to help and believe me when I say they are a marvelous find for lost tourists.

My wife and I had a lovely stay here. It was nice to call directly and talk to friendly person with real solutions to booking a room during a busy season. They have done their best to anticipate what you need, like bikes, cell phones and in many case just provided it free, rather than with nickel and dime charges. I get weary of the shenanigans of some other big hotels in China. The room we stayed in had a very comfortable bed and access to they media server to watch movies on a flat screen TV or just listen to music. They staff was friendly and alway around to help and offer advice. This place has the laid back comfortable feel of a Hostel... but cranked up a few notches for those of us who are looking for more comfort than a backpacker.

Room Tip: Book ahead, we took "The lookout" because it was only room available when we booked.

Thanks for the great review and honest opinions of our place. If there's one element of The Orchid we'd love people to feel when they stay here it's simply being down to earth - in a fun and stylish way. This isn't a 5-star hotel with dozens of smartly-dressed staff waiting for your every request --- it is however a somewhat magical change from the dirt and noise a few meters outside our entrance. You mentioned the word 'hostel' while describing The Orchid, which shows some of the thinking behind this place. Hostels in China always have services and friendly staff a few notches above their big hotel counterparts and fairly more up-to-date. We want to keep all that while simply bumping up the quality of the room features and general accommodations. It seems you noticed, which is great! Please come again!!

The Orchid is fantastic, I ended up staying for 5 days (after having initially only booked for 2), both because the hotel is a delight, and because the location in the centre of the hutongs is such a great place to engage with a part of Beijing which is really charming. Traditional Chinese bikes available from the hotel are the best way to get around - I ended up spending quite a bit of my time exploring the hutongs, rather than 'the sights' of the city, and left feeling enamoured with the area completely.

The rooms are well designed, have incredibly comfortable beds, and in their simplicity have a generally calming feel. Owners and staff were welcoming and extremely helpful in assisting with local restaurant recommendations, onward travel plans etc. (securing train tickets wasn't trivial, so this was much appreciated).

The hotel beer is brewed with green tea and is really quite tasty, as are the breakfasts, and can be enjoyed from a terrace overlooking the ramshackle hutong rooftops. I hope I can make it back to Beijing, and will stay here if I do.

We stayed here a few weeks ago and had a spectacular time! The hotel is very tastefully decorated and we loved the terrace. We found the beds very comfortable and loved the showers. The management is thoughtful and responsive and they made us feel very welcome. This place is a gem!
