Reviewed April 23, 2012

I was looking for a hotel at a reasonable price near the Sanlitun area and access to the Beijing subway. The Ibis was priced at $55 USD a night and gives visitors access to the Hujalou stop.

I arrived in Beijing at approximately 9 at night. The taxi ride from the airport was about 75 yuan. Upon arrival I was promptly given the key to my room. The front desk staff do speak English at a conversational level but not fluently. This was not a problem for me as my inquiries/requests were straightforward. I did notice on one occasion they brought a manager from the back office to assist with a guest request.

I got to my room and began to unpack. The TV was mounted on the wall above the writing desk. It might not work for some people. There is also an ethernet connection on the writing desk. You can plug this into your notebook computer and get internet access. The wall outlet below the writing desk accepts American style plugs as well as Chinese style plugs.

The furniture in room has an Ikea dorm room look. I didn't really mind as I was more concerned with the location and price. The mattress on the bed was a bit too firm for my taste. The room also had a kettle to make tea as well as two 350ml water bottles.

I didn't have breakfast at the hotel. There is a 7-11 right to the left of the hotel so I had no problem picking up a pastry in the morning. There are other food choices of course. If you are in the mood for McD's or KFC you should make a left turn upon exiting the hotel and then turn right on Chaoyang and walk for 1 block. There is also a broad mix of restaurants in the Sanlitun area.

To get to the Hujalou metro stop you turn left as you exit the hotel and make another left on Chaoyang. You can transfer at Guomao and get to Wangfujing or Tiananmen.

A few other areas you might want to explore besides Sanlitun are the Worker's Stadium area and Chaoyang Park.

One thing about the hotel that I did find annoying is that in the early evening (5-7pm) solicitors come around and slip business card sized advertisements for prostitutes under your door. I didn't feel safety was an issue but it was annoying.

The hotel does sell day tours. I did buy two packages. One to the Great Wall at Badaling and the other tour of the Forbidden City, Summer Palace and Temple of Heaven. These tours are conducting by a third party and similar to the tours sold on City Discovery and Viatour. The price was 300RMB for the Great Wall tour and 350RMB for the Forbidden City tour. Pick up and drop off are at the hotel. I highly recommend these tours as they will help you see the most interesting sites in/near Beijing.

Overall the hotel was just what I was wanted. An inexpensive place in a great location. There are some drawbacks to this hotel but you are probably not going to find a better place at $55 a night.

One travel tip: If you have a smartphone, I suggest that you download the TripAdvisor Beijing App. It doesn't use data and it has a built in compass to point you to various points of interest.

Recommend to stay at the Ibis Sanyan instead. The Ibis Dangdaqio is a bit far from the subway station and the hotel has a lot of work to be done regarding public area and room.
Front Office Manager tried to charge a higher room rate on check in. Poor service.
