“Simple, but very charming and the children loved it”

Leo's hostel/ Leo Courtyard is very simple, but we would definitely stay there again. It is in the middle of the hutongs, you can not come closer to chinese everyday life in Beijing.

We stayed in a family room with four beds. Once in bed it is ok, but the rooms are very cold and the staff turns off the heat every time you leave your room. We had to wear winter jackets all the time.

The hostel has a nice bar, tv with dvd, pool table and tv-games. This was perfect for travelling with children and we all got to know chinese guests as we played the foot ball games etc.

The staff is friendly and speak English. Leo's is not a place I would take my 65 year old mother to, perhaps not the children either during the peak season (heard about many wild parties), but in November it was just nice, quiet and a good place to meet other back packers.

Just spend two night in this bad bad Hostel.
The size of the dorm was okay, but the light had an default and could not be fixed, it made an buzzing sound when turned on. There was only a very small heater in the room, and the wall where very thin so it was impossible to make the room warm, i slept with most my clothes on. And the whole building was not heatet so everywhere it was very cold even on the toilet. The beds where very hard and there was only one toilet and 3 showers for like 15 dorms, and you cant use the shower before 11.30am.
The only nice thing was the bar, but it closed at 11pm so not so much fun there either even though the sign said 24 hour open.
The last night my bed broke when i tried to climp to the top level. And when i told the staff about the problem they wanted me to pay for the bed, that obviously was bad. And when i told them i wouldn't they tried to call the cops, but after waiting for 30 minuttes they gave up and let us go. Think they just wanted to scare me.
It is cheap but you can get much better for that price.

We stayed 10 days at the Leo Courtyard Hostel - you can`t go wrong in this excellent choice! The Hostel is right in Beijings Hutongs near Tiananmen Square (10 min. walking). BUT: the hostel is not in the main street but in a small side street. So you`ll have it all: Central location AND quiet sleep!!

The rooms are spacious and have Air-Con. Room service could be better but at least the rooms are clean when you get them. The bathrooms are a bit smelly, maybe because the house is not the newest anymore (traditional house). So better keep the door to the bathroom closed...

Beds are hard (as always in China) but as mentioned before - it is quiet and even in evenings and mornings you will have your peace.

The restaurant is ok, but not outstanding. The best breakfast option in town (price / value) is the "Sakura Bar" in the main pedastrian street (5 min walking) which serves a decent cappucino!).

One advice: better bring your own bathtowel!! The provided ones are really smelly and old... I wouldntt use it even for my feets...

We stayed here for only 1 night on route east to Lanzhou. We had booked at Leo's round the corner, but it was full, and so the staff carried our bags and deposited us here. It was £40 for 1 night, whihc I thought was a little steep by Chinese standards. It is in walking distance to Tian. Sq, Forbidden City and Lao She Teahouse. The place is quaint, charming. Up the little quiet side streets in the hutong.
The staff fairly accomodating, though did not move us to a quieter room - at my request - even though I know there were others available. The restaurant and food are great - very very cheap and tasty.
The rooms are simple, clean, basic. If you are unfortunate enough to be placed between reception and the internet/bar - prepare for a sleepless night due to noisy chinese tourists.
Internet available.

Great location, really neat environment and helpful staff..if there is nobody noisy in the hostel during your stay it can be an ideal place for you to sleep in Beijing. They have a specific relationship to advertisment - only ten minutes to Tiananmen and Forbidden City (maybe by taxi). All kinds of shops and food is just round the corner or even closer. Not useful for lazy people with a lot of baggage - closest street with taxi service is some 5 minutes away. Free internet until 1 a.m. Slightly bad-looking bathrooms.
