“The Best in Beijing!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 14, 2014

If you don't want to stay in a large impersonal generic hotel then this place is for you. The Red Wall Garden offers tons of character, excellent staff, a good breakfast, clean environment and excellent location. We really enjoyed our stay here especially the care that the staff gave us. They spoke perfect English and were on hand to help us with everything we needed and wanted both in the hotel and planning our adventures in Beijing.

We took the free airport transfer which you get if you book 5 nights and the professional driver was there to greet us. On arrival the staff already knew about our needs. Before arrival they sent a survey asking for more info and it is worth filling it in so that they can make you as comfortable as possible. For example in the survey I asked for a soft bed (beds in China tend to be hard) and they provided the soft bed; we said we didn't eat meat and on arrival they went through all the options they could offer us and asked how they could treat us for our anniversary (fruit basket etc).
The room was clean and spacious, the furniture is all in good condition and beautiful. Perhaps the best thing about the hotel is that it is in a Hutong and has so much character.
I vary rarely have nothing bad to say about a hotel but this one gets top marks, I would definately stay there again.

Dear mash66:
Being called "The Best in Beijing" by a discerning and frequent traveler like yourself is very humbling - thank you for your kind review!
In your feedback you honed in on what (hopefully) sets apart from our larger multinational competitors: knowing our guest's needs even before they arrive and proactively following through in a friendly and professional manner to ensure that their expectations are being met and exceeded in day-to-day operations. In fact, we highly encourage our team members to take the time to learn more about our guests and in turn share some of their own experiences about living in Beijing.
One small correction regarding your comments on our complimentary airport pick-up: guests that book directly with us, either by website or phone, only need to book for 3+ nights to avail themselves of this complimentary service, not 5.
We very much appreciate your endorsement of our efforts and hope to welcome you back in the future,
Your Red Wall Garden Team

I was so impressed by this hotel from the moment I arrived. It is so pretty and atmospheric, which is all the more impressive given that it is located right in the heart of Beijing. I was given a room upgrade and was overwhelmed by the accommodation: The room was a duplex, with a traditional Chinese style decor and modern luxuries such as a television on both floors, a huge bathroom and an incredibly comfortable bed. There were also so many little touches to make it feel very special.
What really stood out were the staff, who were all so friendly and welcoming, and the management went out of their way to assist me with a visa issue which really impressed me.
I would have no hesitation recommending this hotel; it offers so much more as an experience than a generic five star hotel.

Dear Suzy W
We very much appreciate your kind comments regarding Red Wall's accommodations and staff!
It is indeed our aim to provide not only first class facilities, but also impart hutong flair and offer a sincere brand of Beijing hospitality. Our staff is almost exclusively Chinese and while there is the occasional language gap to contend with, everyone in the team genuinely wants to ensure that our foreign guests return to their home countries with fond memories of their visit to China.
Thank you again,
Your Red Wall Garden Team

What a great hotel! Nearby to Wangfujing street and many restaurants. Also close to the subway (really inexpensive and easy to figure out). Our room was spacious, the shower was heavenly and the breakfast buffet was good (had both Chinese and Western options). We booked a tour to the Great Wall, we had a lovely tour guide. Would recommend, will stay again if we ever make it back to Beijing.

Dear MrAndMrsP1003:
We are glad you enjoyed your time here with us at Red Wall Garden Hotel.
As you correctly stated, being so close to the historic center and the shopping destinations in Beijing has its obvious advantages. But even if you want to venture out a bit further, "Dengshikou" subway station is only a short walk from the hotel and for only 30 cents you can travel to any destination within Beijing.
Thank you for your wonderful review - stay warm up there in Wisconsin,
Your Red Wall Garden Team

I've been living in China and stayed here with my wife when she visited. The hotel is situated in one of the Beijing's remaining hutongs, a charming location but also conveniently located to all the cultural sites, bars and restaurants.

All the staff were fantastic, warm and friendly going out of their way to help and made us feel welcome. My wife unfortunately broke her foot before arriving and the Red Wall Garden staff were incredibly accommodating (chauffeuring us to hospitals and simple stuff like printing out travel insurance/medical forms) and made a difficult situation bearable without trying to profit by charging additional costs (somewhat unusual for China).

I've stayed in quite a few Chinese hotels (including considerably more expensive ones) and I have to say that the Red Wall Garden is my favourite in terms of value, location and genuinely warm, friendly and helpful staff; I'd definitely return.

Dear Adhamhm:
Thank you very much for your kind review - we are glad you and your wife enjoyed your stay with us and hope her leg is on the mend.
We pride ourselves on going "the extra mile" for our guests and assisting you with the local hospital bureaucracy was the least we could have done in this situation. While there are some great hospitals in the immediate vicinity of our hotel, it can be a daunting task to try to communicate with the staff there if you do not speak Chinese; we are glad everything worked out in the end and you had a chance to partake in the Spring Festival festivities.

Happy Year of the Horse to you and your loved ones,
Your Red Wall Garden Team

My wife and I had been here previously in the fall, and she decided that for my birthday we would do it again. This place never ceases to be amazing. The ambience, the atmosphere, the architecture blows away anything that the sterile corporate powerhouses have down the street. The service is always exceptional and low-key and are always making sure that we were satisfied. We had a lovely girl named Pennapa who made our stay just that much better by arranging a couple of special birthday treats for me. She was courteous and very, very good at her job.

This place is located a 10 minute walk from Wangfujing and in our minds, you can have your 5 star hotel on the busy main street. If you want some place that is authentic, different , quiet and romantic, this is the place to go.

One really very minor and stupid negative thing…No DVD player…And that was our only small, minor, insignificant issue...

Dear BronwynWorldTour:
The best compliment a guest can give us is to return to our boutique hotel for a second time! Thank you for your wonderful comments.
If you should decide to honor us with yet another reservation in the future, make sure to contact our guest services staff for any special requests such as a DVD player. While we do not have one in every room, they are available upon request at the reception.
I shared your review with Pennapa, our tireless guest services manager - she asked me to send you her best wishes.

On the approach to the hotel I was a little worried as it was down a tiny alleyway, but this just added to the charm. A really good location for visiting Wangfujing Street, about a 10 minute walk. The staff spoke good english, and the room was comfortable and warm. Bathroom was great, and everything was spotlessly clean. Really comfy bed! Good variety of food for breakfast, both eastern & Western choices. The hotel arranged a private guide to take us to the Great Wall, and although a bit pricey, worth every penny paid! I would thoroughly recommend doing this. Overall a great experience for our first trip to China. Thank you Red Wall Garden.

Dear Amanda J:
We hope you had a safe trip back to the United Kingdom and are pleased to read that you enjoyed your stay and the excursion to the Great Wall.
Other tripadvisor readers might be interested to know that there are two main Great Wall sections that are worth exploring via daytrip from Beijing: Mutaniyu and Badaling, both about a 90 minute car ride away. To get there, we strongly recommend that you stay away from joining larger tour groups, however, as these busses tend to stop in "hard-sell" stores along the way where you are "invited" to buy Chinese goods. A much better option is to book a private tour through our hotel (with or without guide) and, while slightly more expensive, this choice offers a much more private and pleasant experience.

Amanda, I will pass your kind words on to the staff. Hopefully, we will have a chance to welcome you back soon.

Thanks to an adventurous friend from the US who travels the world and wherever he goes he always finds the most typical place to stay and interesting things to do in that place, and who first introduced me to Red Wall Garden Hotel in Beijing.

Located in one of the most famous hutongs-Shi Jia Hutong- in the very central city, Red Wall finds its quiet square meters among the hustling-bustling of the metropolitan Beijing and subway station nearby very convenient.

Late summer in early September of last year, sitting in its courtyard chatting and drinking with friends under moonlight and gentle breeze, a voice from the back of my head tells me that I should try a night here experiencing what I’ve always felt about staying in a courtyard house of Beijing, a curious expectation back to my childhood.

It was done, right before this Chinese New Year of the Horse! Cold outside, warm and privacy inside. Small quiet wood crackling sound from the fire place in the restaurant, delicious Beijing noodles (the best I’d ever had!), spicy pan-fried pork slices…a bottle of Italian Chardonnay (yeah, believe me, try it with Chinese dishes!)…wooden staircases, old Chinese style decoration and furniture room, warm cozy lighting, a quietness extreme…and if with the right person…how romantic that could be…

Definitely, try it out when time is right.
