This place seems to be an unknown to Western tourists. We were the only Westerners there. It is amazing. The kids absolutely loved it and we had to drag them away from every display. EVERYTHING is interactive. The facilities are spotless and air conditioned. We were blown away by the museum. It is near the Olympic Stadium, the old one closed down so make sure you get the right one. It is a nice break from walking around outside in the heat. They have a Children's Paradise area for pre-schoolers which we didn't visit as our kids are 5, 9 and 10.

If you are short on time, go to level 3 first which has the 4 exhibition halls. Good luck with dragging the kids away from the cars, balls and ships and robots! Well worth the visit.

There is food and drinks on all levels and really clean toilets.

The China Science and technology museum is very new, having been built in the Olympic precinct in time for the Olympics. It's got all the things you'd expect from a science and technology museum - hands on demonstrations of various concepts, like electricity, Newtons laws, various geological phenomena. Not only that, but all of the exhibits work and are staffed.

There is quite a lot of information in English, more than enough to make this a great museum for English only speakers.

The best part is a gallery devoted entirely to Chinese inventions. It includes the well known gunpowder and printing, but also some lesser known inventions like base 10 numbers, single span bridges, and magnetic compasses.

Finally it also has a science playground for the under 10s which is more playground than science but still has quite a lot of scientific info. My 9 year old figured out how water locks worked, for example.

Highly recommended for anyone with kids, or anyone interested in science and technology.

This review is very late. We visited this museum on 10th November 2009. We had the place almost all to ourselves as it was during the unexpected early snowfall in Beijing and it had just been opened recently. It is a huge museum with many floors, sophisticated displays and interactive exhibits. Truly world class. We were pleasantly surprised. For my kids, the best part is the kids' playroom which has lots of interactive playthings. One cd spend the whole day here! There's a separate charge for the playroom. If time permits, this is a great place to visit.
