Great open air market with fabulous atmosphere. Great place to buy fake antiques, painting, statues, sculptures, jewelry, books, etc. Bargain hard!

Went to the market on a Saturday morning and it was crowded. So much stimulation - the millions of items for sale, the people, the haggling, the calculators in hands, all worth the trip. Great place to grab a gift for your family and friends back home or for yourself.

If one wants an immersion into just about everything artistic China ever made or sold--and is for sale now--go for it. Panjiayuan is easy to reach on the #10 Subway line, a short walk down the road to the left from the Subway station to the market's main entrance (marked by a large carved rock just inside). But there are different entrances, and it is not always intuitive that you're at the right one. We first went into a different gate--many vendors of paper items under a sort of bridge--and didn't realize that was not the entire market. So scout around.

It is not fair to say everything here is "real" or "fake" because a lot of it just is what it is, and fake/real don't apply. The paper items looked authentic enough. But because of the popularity of this market, bargaining has been spoiled. The initial asking prices are absurdly high and if they think you are a rich tourist, they don't want to come down much or at all--they know they can just wait and get more from someone else. This is fair enough but go in with the idea you don't really want to buy anything, and you will then be pleasantly surprised. There are lot and lots of beautiful things in this market. You could supply yourself with enough holiday gifts to last the rest of your life.

I have visited this market a few times in the last couple of months - definitely go on a Saturday or a sunday - it opens at 4.30am and if you get there about 8.30 -09.00 you beat the crowds. As stated before here, don't aim to find a hidden treasure, but there's something about the atmosphere, the stall holders, the haggling and the heaps of nick naks on offer that is great to absorb. Definitely worth a trip and around the corner from the subway - even if you've just got an hour to kill - go!

Plenty of sights and sounds to take up in this place, but that's it for the casual observer. Stay away from big ticket buys if you're not a connoisseur as there are plenty of fakes and ripoffs around -no way you're getting your money back either. That aside, plenty of fun little trinkets for souvenirs and gifts.
