“Well worth visiting”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

Our taxi driver told us that only tourists visit 798, no Chinese people would go there as you can't get Chinese food only western food! Well, he was right about the food but the place was full of visitors both Chinese and non-Chinese. We only spent an afternoon here, which was really not enough time to do it justice. However, we really enjoyed wandering in and out of the galleries and shops. Yes, some of the shops do sell some tat, but most did have some interesting things in them. Of the art I saw, well some I liked some I didn't, but isn't that what visiting galleries is all about. We ate in one of the cafes and the menu was all western food and at western prices. Nevertheless, the quality was good so I really didn't mind too much. I will certainly come back here on my next visit to Beijing and spend more time looking around.

“Confusing Site”
Reviewed January 10, 2013

We were excited to visit this area to see what's happening in the Beijing art scene but after going, I still can't say we learned anything. 798 is a repurposed industrial area comprised of several city blocks but we found very few buildings were open, very few were marked, and among those that were, very few housed art. After a full afternoon at 798, I can count 3 galleries we discovered that had any art in them at all, and 2 stores selling products of a modern design. The rest of the time we walked about in confusion looking for something to see.

“Art in all its variety”
Reviewed January 9, 2013

This former factory area has been turned into a home for numerous art galleries. You can immerse yourself in art for the afternoon or the day by wandering from one to another and seeing a broad spectrum of styles and talents from China and elsewhere. Where else would you find art from the Democratic Peoples' Republic of Korea? And when you're tired of wandering or need a pick-me-up, there are numerous cafes just waiting for you to come in and sit down.

“The other side of Beijing”
Reviewed January 8, 2013

Off all the must visit places in Beijing I visited this the last and was shocked. This is really different side of the city you get to see. Modern, upcoming and bold. Check out the website to see what art is on display where. Keep at least one full day. Ample places to eat and grab a bite.

a waste of an afternoon for our group. This area used to house artists, now there are many empty warehouse spaces and supposedly a few "liberal and free-thinking" artists inhabit the space. Don't waste your time here.
