Our taxi driver told us that only tourists visit 798, no Chinese people would go there as you can't get Chinese food only western food! Well, he was right about the food but the place was full of visitors both Chinese and non-Chinese. We only spent an afternoon here, which was really not enough time to do it justice. However, we really enjoyed wandering in and out of the galleries and shops. Yes, some of the shops do sell some tat, but most did have some interesting things in them. Of the art I saw, well some I liked some I didn't, but isn't that what visiting galleries is all about. We ate in one of the cafes and the menu was all western food and at western prices. Nevertheless, the quality was good so I really didn't mind too much. I will certainly come back here on my next visit to Beijing and spend more time looking around.
