“Not a great stay”
Reviewed October 21, 2011

Our apartment had the lowest end Ikea furniture - beds like sleeping on the floor. Shower in main part of apartment didn't drain - had to take a shower quickly so drain wouldn't overflow. Shower in master bedroom was hanging by a screw - took days before it was fixed. Rented phones, ran out of minutes - didn't tell you the phones were limited.

Tours - not run by East Apts - refer you to a travel agent who palms you off to someone else.

No assistance whatsoever. Was there an office to this facility? We couldn't find it.

Room Tip: Don't stay in the older buildings - the new ones are in much better shape.

We spent 8 days in the East Apts earlier this month. We had two 3-bedroom apartments for my friends and their families. It was a very good experience, and the location is as good as any in Bejing, where it takes forever to get around no matter where you are.

A few tips might make settling in easier for other visitors. First, while the website shows many buildings as if this is a big complex, in fact East Apts is just a few apartments in various of the buildings that are owned by the business. So your taxi driver will have no idea where it is just by the name. The address is a bit confusing too. This google map is centered on the apartment complex: http://tinyurl.com/3p3dcc3 We never did find the swimming/gym complex, not that we looked that hard.

We regretted not paying for the airport transfer from East Apts, as our driver had a very hard time finding the place. Also, you can't drive right up to the gates of the buildings. You have to walk about 25 meters from the main street to one of the pedestrian entry gates. If you don't know where the gates are, find them before dragging your luggage around. Be nice to the guards, and they'll help you out. Be demanding, and they'll play dumb. :)

Our unit had no dryer, but the clothing lines in the sun room work well. Bring your own detergent. The kitchen had filtered/clean hot and room temp water dispensers, but no coffee maker. We brought our own instant coffee and creamer, which was a lifesaver. The maids left some (basic) bath and hand towels on the first day, but it wasn't clear what it took to get clean ones. Putting a dirty one on the floor didn't work. Finally I washed my own after a few days. They don't provide wash cloths, shampoo, or shower gel, so bring your own. Each room has its own a/c unit, which is typical in China. Our room didn't have any English-language TV channels, but our other party's room did. There's a small convenience store inside the complex. They don't speak English but give it a try -- you can get what you need very cheaply and quickly.

From our apartment at the far end of the complex, it was a good 10-12 minute walk to the mall, subway stop, and Starbucks, which are all at the corner of Guangqumen Outer St and Huilin Rd. You have to walk past some rather dodgy businesses on Guangqumen to get there, but it seems safe. For some reason, even on the 8th floor the street noises make their way in, including honking that goes on at all hours. You get used to it. As someone else said, the beds are hard by US standards, but definitely not as hard as traditional Chinese beds. There are actual mattresses! There is a lot of dust in Beijing, so even with daily cleanings, the floors were never clean enough to walk on barefooted. Bring slippers.

The American manager is very nice and will respond quickly to any problems. Our power went out one morning, and he had the building maintenance fix it in less than half an hour.

We recently spent about two weeks in two apartments and found it family friendly - our biggest criteria. We were four adults and four kids. We were looking for a location close to Central Beijing so two of the kids could go to a Chinese language camp. East Apartments worked well for us on this level. A bonus was that the apartments are located in a nice residential area, so that working around the gardens you have a feeling that you are away from the busy streets and that kids can play safely. And when everyone comes out on hot evening to promenade in the gardens, it gives you a feeling that you are living closer to real Chinese families. A much more interesting experience than being isolated in the locations where most hotels are. Sev, the manager, also made us feel very welcome, and was always avaiable to help in ways above the call of duty. He has an excellent service ethic. Price was also good for us and although you can't expect five star luxury for the price, Sev has his staff doing valuable extras (like putting through your washing every day) that make staying in the hot summer months much more bearable. That is also why the pool was welcome!

Room Tip: Ask for a location near the swimming complex.

I stayed for 28 days at East Apartments. The mgr was great, an American that could help someone new to Beijing. Maid service everyday. Kitchen ok and even better when I requested better pans. It is not the Hilton, but is comfortable and quiet.
