Black sesame kitchen, once I found it was a revelation in chinese food. You have to enter a courtyard in a hutong and wend your way to the back to locate it. They have one seating a night and it's a communal meal. Lucky for me they could accommodate me the following day and were also very gracious in making adjustments to the menu to accommodate my "no-meat" style of vegetarianism. The sesame ice-cream with caramelised sweet potato was to die-for. I write this review most reluctantly because I want to share the joy but fear the chaos that success will inevitably bring.

I found this restaurant on Fodors by a reviewer. This is located in the depths of the Hutong neighborhood in Beijing. Not easy to find...BUT when you do, it is worth the trip.
The people were welcoming and the small but cosy place smelled great when we arrived. Communal seating, we met people from all over the world. Ten course meal with wine, all with different flavors. It was such an enjoyable evening and the people were so friendly and engaging. Food excellent! We will be talking about it for a long time! If you have one place to visit in Beijing when you are hungry, be sure to make a reservation at this out of the way FABULOUS PLACE!!!!

My husband and I spent five days in Beijing in late November 2013. Pretty cold weather, crisp air and sunny. We had booked dinner for two at the Black Sesame Kitchen based on Trip advisor reviews and were not disappointed. Very warm atmosphere, great cooking - especially as we were seated at the table in the kitchen and could watch the cooking. (There seems to be two rooms with one big table in each room. The guys in the next room seemed to have a great time too, though!) Very friendly english-speaking waiters! Nice wines (Australian) and beers included in the price. International guests around the one table - lots of interesting discussions.

The restaurant is very warming and welcoming, is like having dinner in a friend's place. The fixed menu cosseted of 10 servings, one better than the other, the sesame cream with warm caramel was just mind-blowing. Need to book in advance

We had a reservation to dine at Black Sesame Kitchen during our recent stay in Beijing, but unfortunately our Chinese guest was hospitalized so we called a few days ahead to cancel our reservation.

We spoke to Michelle, who extended the invitation to keep the reservation--even though it would only be two of us instead of the normal minimum of four persons. We gratefully accepted, but had to cancel yet again when one of us developed food poisoning the day before.

Michelle was kind enough to recommend SOS International, a clinic where we could see an English-speaking doctor who prescribed antibiotics and rehydration salts.

So despite not having the opportunity to sample the food at Black Sesame Kitchen, we want to recognize the fact that the BSK team far exceeded our expectations in the service category with their friendly concern for strangers in need of advice and sympathy.
