I have been to China many times, and have even participated in one of the BSK's cooking classes, but enjoying their Wine and Dine dinner was a truly exceptional experience. The restaurant is small, so advance reservations are necessary. It is located in a hutong, a traditional Beijing neighborhood, which is very interesting to visit if you are not familiar with Beijing. We visited with a party of 10 people, both Chinese and American. We were seated in the kitchen and could watch the food being prepared directly in front of the table. They offer 10 pre-planned courses with wine or beer, ending with their one western course of Black Sesame Ice Cream. All of the food was delicious! I had been a bit worried about how our honored Chinese guests would enjoy the food, but the evening turned out to be a wonderful adventure for all of us. The open atmosphere and friendliness of the staff contributed to making what normally would have been a formal outing into one of the best occasions we have enjoyed for casual conversation and sharing about our cultures. One of the best attributes is that at least two of the staff members speak excellent English in addition to Chinese, so everyone was included equally in the descriptions of the food and the cooking techniques. Please note that reservations are a must, dinner is pre-planned, the tables are normally set up for sharing by small groups, and they only accepted cash when we visited. I highly recommend this restaurant for dining and cooking classses. It is amazing!

We went to Black Sesame on our first night in Beijing. It was excellent and it was a great start to our trip - we felt very welcome and at home. It was just my husband and I traveling, and we didn't know much about China, so it was a really nice orientation because we got to talk to other travelers (you sit at one of two communal tables). Michelle and Coco are excellent hostesses. Everything we ate and drank was delicious and they were also able to accomodate my dairy allergy in the dessert which was nice. All the entrees were great and we got to try new things like lotus root. The price was completely reasonable - it was more than we paid at some restaurants, but less than what you would pay at some other Beijing restaurants...and it was worth every penny regardless.
The shops around the restaurant are great - some of the best we saw in China. Small and local, but not typical tourist stuff beyond what you'd actually want to buy (nice fans, slippers, etc.). They were open after dinner (until about 11pm) too.
Note that the restaurant is a little difficult to find. It's right next to Wiggly Piggly like they tell you, but it's down a VERY dark entryway. It is #3, but we couldn't see the number anywhere. Michelle eventually came outside and found us wandering around! Give yourself some extra time to find it (and to shop) if you can!

It's like going to a family's house for dinner. There are two rooms seating about 10 per room. The owner is always going around making sure that you have enough and that you are enjoying it. Her English is excellent, but that's understanderable when you learn that Michelle is from New Zealand. I would definitely recommend that you go there.

I made the reservation based on the high trip advisor rating and we loved it. It was fun finding the place also.

Small and not easy to find, Black Sesame is well worth the experience. There were 12 of us in the private dining room, where we watched the chefs create the meal, which was delicious. They were happy to take all of our questions, making it a cooking lesson as well as a fabulous dining experience.

Highly recommended, but it is tiny so book well in advance! P.S. the dumplings and chilli chicken were to die for!
