The Black Sesame had been recommended to us by friends and I found that it lived up to the hype. It was good food served in an unpretentious kitchen with excellent staff.
The communal table is set up in front of the kitchen with a mirror on the ceiling to watch the chef work, making you feel like you are on a cooking show. While he is working his magic the hosts are taking turns serving up wine and talking about the dishes and Chinese cuisine with the guests. The price tag is a little higher than one would expect in China but it is well worth it. You get a chance to try a variety of dishes, meet people and have a wonderful meal in a relaxing setting. They do a wonderful job of making you feel at home.

Thirteen of us went to The Black Sesame Kitchen for dinner on a Sunday night, September 2012. We had an incredibly good time. The restaurant was a bit difficult to find but I was in constant communication with the owner giving me directions. The food was fabulous and I personally could not eat all of it, although I heard later that I should have held out for the dessert. The staff were all entertaining and helpful. Yes, it was a bit on the expensive side, but the wine and food was unlimited. I think it was worth every penny (or yuan) I paid. We asked for a special seating at 6 instead of 7, and we asked in advance for no seafood, no fish, and told the owner that one of us was a vegetarian. All requests were taken and our entire group had a fabulous time. No complaints whatsoever. This was one of the best times I've had in Beijing! On the helpful side, there is a western style washroom right at the restaurant.

Without thinking we made our reservation at Black Sesame Kitchen for our first evening in Beijing. After a long day of sightseeing and a too short rest at the hotel, we could hardly get our kids up and out to the restaurant. But afterwards we all agreed it was the most delicious meal of our trip and certainly the most enjoyable. We loved the cozy atmosphere and were thoroughly entertained by our fellow tablemates. Each course was a treat topped off by their famous Black Sesame ice cream for dessert. Highly recommend it if you are looking for a unique and delicious dining experience. We sat in the kitchen while another group sat in the lounge. Even though the high stools aren't the most comfortable, the fun atmosphere in the kitchen is what makes the experience so special.

We were lucky because we got a table last minute, but I would advice to book well in advance.
Pick the family style dinner, as you get to sample 10 different dishes. Atmosphere is lovely, people speak perfect English, and you get to observe the chefs at work.
Don't miss the pork belly and pumpkin and pork dumplings.

After having read the reviews on Trip Advisor we went to the BSK with great expectations - but we regrettably left the place feeling very disappointed by all the hype! The food served to us including dessert was fried (or sautéed) and our clothes reeked of fried food after the dinner. The communal table was too crowded and the six 'guests' on one side of our table were very noisy (boisterous even) and competed with the noise from the near by open kitchen; we could hardly hear ourselves and the conversation on our side of the table. The toilet was also too close to the dining area for comfort.

I think the 300 RMB per person we shelled out was not justified for the undistingished dishes (too oily) and rather mediocre wine we got; for that sum we had a much better and more tranquil dining experience at the Huang Ting restaurant at The Peninsula. My experience in Asia has been that restaurants in 5 star hotels (les palaces as the French would say) are so much better in value - in terms of food, service and ambience!

Dear EloZ523 –

Thank you for your valuable feedback. We strive to make every customer experience as fulfilling as possible and apologize that we did not meet your expectations.

As we are a private kitchen with an open cooking area, in a traditional courtyard setting, all the cooking techniques employed by Black Sesame Kitchen and Chef Zhang are all very typical of any home kitchen and Chinese restaurant.

Our hope is our guests who dine with us during our communal evenings should come with an open mind and be prepared to share a table with others and indeed, the atmosphere is not that of a 5-star hotel, but that of as we are in a Qing Dynasty courtyard that gives a window into how Beijingers have lived for hundreds of years in addition to enjoying a typical home cooked meal in an authentic Chinese setting.

If you would like a refund because you feel you were unfairly charged for the experience, please send an email to us, letting us know the name on your reservation, when you dined with us, and how many were in your party.

We would also appreciate that you include additional advice on how we could have made your experience a more positive one.

Thank you and happy dining and cooking.
